[Charlie's POV]

I woke up around 6:00pm from a nap and looked around. It was oddly quiet in my house today, which isn't normal as I live with my two children and my husband Matt.

I reluctantly flung my legs over the side of my bed and stretched. My eyes suddenly caught a glimpse of what seemed to be a small box wrapped in shiny black paper. I staggered over to it (my legs still hadn't woken up) and picked it up carefully. I studied it for a while and soon noticed that the shiny parts of the paper were little bats that were scattered around the rest of the paper. My brain had no rational explanation as to why this box has been left in my room in such an odd place but I didn't care. I needed to know what was inside the box.

I trudged back over to my bed and flopped down onto it before holding the box over my face. At first I hesitated to open the box but I soon found myself carefully prying off the wrapping paper and laying it on the bed next to me. What was hidden inside of the paper wan a small black box which looked as if it could only fit a panic sharper inside it. (don't ask it was just the first thing that came to mind.)

On top of the box was a little note scrawled in the worst handwriting I had ever seen which told me straight away who had written it.
Matt.

I smiled and put it on the side then trudged downstairs to find where everyone was hiding. As I wandered down the stairs I saw a vast amount of Halloween decorations strung up everywhere on the walls and even in the stairs themselves. Matt had placed tiny blacks skulls that each had a red rose in between their teeth on the corners of every step. My face burned as I smiled at what he had done, he knew Halloween was my favourite season (and not just because it was my birthday today).

As I approached the last of the steps I saw another little note that had "avoid the spiders" written on it in neater handwriting than before. Taking the note into account I cautiously stepped past a number of plastic spiders that littered the floor of the living room and looked around again. Nobody was there.

At this point panic started to creep in slowly at the thought they'd all gone out trick or treating without me (yes I am I big kid don't judge me.) but I decided to keep looking around, reluctant to give in.
My eyes darted around the room taking in all the decorations that I assume Matt and the kids had put up while I was sleeping and I couldn't help but smile. It was all so beautiful.
I kept walking until I reached the kitchen and saw another note, this time it read: 'enter if you dare' in scribbled handwriting follows by a few doodles of what I assumed was a pair of eyes with blood splatters.

My hand pushed open the kitchen door and I walked into complete darkness. I froze in place, not wanting to proceed any further just in case there were any more plastic spiders dominating the floor. I waited for a few minutes while my eyes adjusted to the dark and when I was 100% sure that there were no plastic insects on the floor I moved further forward into the kitchen.
Fumbling around, my hands blindly searched for the light-switch that I knew was somewhere on the wall. After a while my hands found it and I instantly flicked the light on. I was immediately greeted by three silhouettes stood in the middle of the kitchen and I smiled.
I didn't have much time to comprehend what was happening before I heard three familiar voices yelling "happy birthday!" As loud as they could before I was pulled into a group hug.

Matt: "happy birthday baby!"

Charlie: "thank you Matt, I-"

Olivia & Luke: "happy birthday mum!"

Charlie: "thank you both, I didn't ev-"

I didn't get chance to finish my sentence before I was once again pulled into a tight hug by my family. I was so tired and stressed from my job that I had forgotten it was my birthday until I was reminded my Matt, Olivia and Luke.
Eh fuck it. They didn't need to know I'd forgotten so I just left it and continued to hug them all, a wide smile plastered on my face.

Olivia: "Daaaad! Can we go trick or treating nowwww?"

Matt: "yes of course let's get you both into your costumes then."

I picked up Luke and headed upstairs to change into my costume as well as change Luke into his own. After a while of kicking and whining I eventually had managed to successfully put Luke in his little pirate outfit, he looked adorable. I added the finishing touches to my own outfit and headed downstairs to meet the rest of the gang and see if they were ready to go out.
Of course, they were.

Once again I found myself smiling like a complete idiot and took Matts hand.

Charlie: "ready you two?"

Olivia & Luke: "yesss!!"

Matt: "well In that case let's go!"

We all headed out the door ready to collect lots of sweets and chocolate and scare the occasional group of kids. It was fair to say that this was one of the best birthdays I'd ever had.
