Mimi smiled at what she saw in the cracked long mirror that hung on the wall in her mother's bedroom. She was very pretty and was well aware of the fact but it never got into her head. Everyone said she took after her mother who was the village beauty of her time. The glaring difference between them was that while her mother was very fair and had a skin that shone like polished gold, she had a rich 'chocolatey' complexion which had a few scars here and there due to some of her daring childhood games which often ended in fighting with her mates. The similarities in their physiques were also glaring;similar pointed noses, oblong shaped face, a perfect set of dentition which nursed a magical smile always and a tall slim build but Mimi was taller than her mother a little due to obvious reasons. Her mother's features were getting paler by the day because of the stress she had undergone when she was losing pregnancies(after she married Mimi's late father many years ago), and after her daughter and husband died within the space of six years.
She was still staring at her reflection when she heard her mother yell her name from the kitchen. She quickly ran outside the house into the kitchen where her mother was plucking leaves from the vegetables for their dinner but stopped abruptly when she noticed Ngozi standing at the door of the wooden shack they used as a kitchen. "Hey", she greeted smiling. She was always pleased to see Ngozi because she was the only friend her mother knew and allowed her to go out with. Ngozi hissed, "is it me that you are doing hey with?" Mimi punched her lightly before replying "Go sidon jor", she turned to her mother, "Mama, you called me". "Your friend is here". her mother said not taking her eyes up from the leaves she was plucking. Ngozi and Mimi moved into the house."Mmmm", Mimi moaned, "they taste great. where did you pluck them from?". Ngozi shook her head as she continued tearing the flesh of her mangoes with her teeth, "Me keh? It was senior Moses that gave them to me on my way here. He said i should give them to you". Mimi nearly dropped her fruit at the mention of his name. "Really?", she enquired surprised. Ngozi nodded in affirmation, she looked around before she whispered "I did not tell you outside because i don't want your mother to ban me from seeing you because i am bringing gifts from boys to you. You know our African parents na", both of them laughed heartily.
They chatted for another two hours about topics ranging from school work to the next festivity. When it was time for Ngozi to take her exit, Mimi saw her off to the main road which was also a crossroad that separated their streets.
While walking down the road that led to her house, Mimi started kicking stones which was something she always did when she was trekking alone and bored. She didn't see much people on the road because it was almost late in the evening and people were back from their farms and workplaces. Suddenly, the blast of a car horn behind her startled and made her jump off the road like a person who saw a snake. She turned back sharply and grimaced when she saw it was Chief Okocha who was driving his brand new Toyota car. Her frown deepened when he wound his tinted glasses down and was wearing a mischievous grin on his face. "Oh GOD, what does this man want from me now?", she muttered. "Hello Angel", the chief's hoarse voice which she disliked so much called out to her. "Good morning Sir", she greeted out of sheer courtesy and kept on walking as his car annoyingly moved at the same pace she walked. If there was anyone in the entire village who did not know and dislike the Chief, the person had to be a newcomer to the village and it will not take a long time for the person to know and dislike him immensely. He was the tyrant of the village and a philanderer. He went about forcefully taking away people's lands and wives from them. He even resorted to chasing after young girls like Mimi despite the fact that he has many wives at home. He got away with most of his evil deeds because of his wealth and strong political connections especially with the Police who are subjected to massive bribery and neglect by the Government. "Don't you think it's a little too late for a young lady like you to walk about alone?" Why don't you hop in and I'll give you a ride", Mimi nearly puked on the road. She couldn't even fathom herself being so close to someone who could be the most unpleasant person in the world. "No, thank you sir", she refused politely. "Come on, stop being stubborn", the Chief persisted still wearing the grin on his face. Mimi refused to answer him and quickened her pace but he also increased his car speed too. The two of them continued like that until they got a bend which was very lonely and Mimi broke into a run. Surprisingly, he still followed her until she slipped and fell by the wayside. She heard his maniacal laughter as he drove away and tears welled in her eyes from embarrassment.
When she arrived home, her mother asked her to go and take her dinner but she ignored her because she was not in the mood to talk neither eat. Later that night, she dreamt that she was hugging Senior Moses warmly but suddenly, he transformed into Chief Okocha and he was laughing the same maniacal laughter.A/N: The second chapter is over!
