When Evan Hansen smiles, it is not subtle. It should not be real. Because when you startle Evan into a smile, it explodes across his face, lighting the entire room like the fireworks that sparked Connor's heart every time he saw it. His eyes went wide, this time, mouth falling open as he realized this. His face dropped a bit from a surprised smile into a smirk and wow. Evan Hansen was (trying to) smirk craftily. His smile became closed lip, his head tilted down, and...was he intentionally bugging out his eyes? Clearly a joke. Connor chuckled, he had the cutest boyfriend– no matter what Michael said. "Yup!" and the craftiness vanished. Evan was smiling brightly, eyes sparkling in the sun, shining through the windows in the music room. "Now how are you squeezing your fingers into the fret? It's so tiny!"

When you compliment Connor on an achievement, however small, he starts grinning this special grin. He doesn't even know he's doing it, but his eyes light up and his nose scrunches just a little and his smile stretches across the Pacific Ocean. And when you ask him for help to also achieve this small success, that's when his dimples come out to play. He ducks his head, and tucks his hair behind his ear partially because he's really obviously flushed, but mostly because once someone told him that it was scary, that it looked like was barring his teeth. But the best part is that the grin returns to his face every time he thinks about it for the rest of the day.

So a period later, during lunch, when Evan mentioned to Rich that his ever-boasted "matchmaking ability, shown by writing 'boyf riends' on those two's– and here he always gestures to Michael and Jeremy. Which perfectly proves his point because, like on that day, Jeremy is usually snuggled into Michael's sweatshirt, hiding his obvious blush– backpacks" was in fact, mistaken, because Jeremy was doing the do with the delivery guy, Connor snorted, and started thinking about music again.

He smiled, wide and dimpled. He flushed. He ducked his head and tucked his hair behind his ear. Tried to hide the grin before someone notices asked why he was so happy.

No one did, save for two people. Evan, and Connor's little sister.

Now most people get along okay with their little sister. Maybe they find her annoying as fuck, but they get by. Connor was not like that. In middle school– and actually until a few months prior– Connor and Zoe had despised each other wholeheartedly.

A few months prior was when Connor met Evan. Started smiling more. Stopped getting high at school. Started spending more time there. Stopped yelling at her. Started to regain control. Started therapy. Started standing up for her and their mother against their dad when he would shout. Came out as gay to his family.

Zoe didn't know exactly why her brother was grinning that grin, but she knew it had something to with Evan Hansen; she knew he would probably end up telling her every last detail that evening, during their Let's Be Friends Again Movie And Bonding Night: No Parents Allowed.

Evan knew why Connor was smiling like that and felt a rush of pride, and a re-realization that his boyfriend really did like him. He snuggled into Connor's side. Connor put his arm around his shoulder. Evan smiled.

When Evan Hansen is content to the point where time could freeze, and he would be perfectly happy for ever this way, his smile isn't huge. It's a tiny quirking of his lips. But he'll wiggle his way under Connor's shoulder, and sigh, sorta loudly. And then he'll realize how loudly (not as loudly as he thinks), and he'll go red all over. Not because of anxiety, he feels perfect right now, just because of embarassment. He'll tuck his head into Connor's side, burying it inside the taller boy's jacket. And Connor will reach around with his other arm and stroke his hair, and then Evan will peek up at him, smiling the sweetest smile anyone's ever seen, and whisper, "Thank you, Connie."

Of course, what Connor doesn't know that Evan does, is that Connor's looking down at Evan like he's the only thing in the whole of the universe that matters I'm the slightest. Evan has a lot of anxiety about never being someone who matters to anyone– at least, not that much. Anyone besides his mom, who has to love him, because she's his mom. So while Connor's sitting there thinking how his boyfriend is the sweetest, most adorable thing in the world with that smile, Evan's thinking how Connor's looking at him like he's the only thing that exists. And that's what Evan's thanking him for.

Connor will say, "Of course. What're boyfriends for?" every time this happens, and give Evan a little squeeze before they rejoin the world. Connor doesn't realize what Evan's thanking him for, but he also doesn't realize he's doing it.

Zoe's lip quirks watching her brother and his boyfriend. She can tell how much her brother loves this Evan Hansen kid, and, for the first time, hopes her brother's boyfriend doesn't break his heart– and not the other way around.

Evan pulled back from the hug, to take a bite of his pb&j, silently thanking whatever God was out there for sending him Connor Murphy.

// AUTHOR'S NOTE//

What did I say, eh? This took longer than expected because it turns out that today is my dad's birthday so we went out to dinner. But honestly I think this is really good lol. I am planning to do something like this with the boyfs, and one with some more minor characters, like Jake, Rich, Christine, Chloe, Brooke, Zoe, Alana, and Jared– they're all gonna be ships and then Jared will just be like, #foreveralone. I just can't ship him anywhere but Sincerely, Three. I actually might do a Sincerely, Three one since the dynamic is different. I dunno lol. OH AND I'm also eventually going to write Connor And Zoe's Let's Be Friends Again Movie And Bonding Night.

Later, Cultured Cutlery,

Sincerely,

Me,

River
