Writing a novel is an admirable endeavor - and one that can give us a great deal of satisfaction. However, we don't need to write a novel to become writers, right?
If you feel like writing short fiction, you shouldn't let the pressure to write a 50K-word novel in 30 days affect your work.

Writers don't have to be novelists.
There is writerly life beyond novel writing!
In fact, many acclaimed writers are well known for their short narratives.
For those fiction writers who doubt whether a short story writer can get as much literary recognition as a novelist, I suggest looking up the name Alice Munro.
Munro, a Canadian short-story writer who has won several literary awards, was also awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature for her work as a "master of the contemporary short story."
And what about Bob Dylan? He was awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition." No novel writing involved.
Those are just two examples. We could write a whole book about great writers who are not novelists. Yet, every year, as soon as we move closer and closer to November, many of us will want to participate in the global writing frenzy.
