And you have flowers in your mouth

  | Ray's POV |

"So who's your date for the dance?"

"You know Jeremy from Calculus? I asked him out last week after the football game."

"That is so romantic. I still have to find a date, I can't even imagine going to the dance alone."

I lean more into my locker, sighing from how annoyed I am on a Monday morning despite only having just arrived to school. The student counsel have already hung up banners and posters, promoting tickets and the theme of the dance. While it's all very bright and colorful and fun having over excited teenage girls scream like banshees every time a guy responds 'yes', I don't find myself warming to the occasion like the rest of the female population.

Melville High's Cupid's Ball : G.A.G

G for girls, A for asks, and the last G for guys.

In short, girls ask guys.

To think if the half naked babies floating around on the clouds of the posters weren't sickening enough.

Katie and Lynn continue their conversation a few lockers down from mine, though their voices make up for the distance. They giggle and toss their hair discussing eligible dates for Lynn, and the best possible ways to ask them out before they're taken despite the dance being months away.

"It would really suck asking someone out then getting rejected wouldn't it?" Katie says to Lynn, touching up her lip gloss in her locker's mirror.

"We wouldn't have to worry about that though, not like some people."

I look up from my locker at the same moment they do, catching them making a pointed look at me. They look down quickly and giggle, nudging each other giddily after they caught my eye. I roll my eyes at them and try ignore the pit in the bottom of my stomach. The pit trying to expand the truth in their words. I grab my textbooks and close my locker, turning around and meeting an expensive sweater with J.M embroidered at the chest in gold thread.

Jaxon smirks coldly at me. "Ray, it's been a while- how are things?"

I turn away from him, looking down at the polished floor and take a step around him. "Hey, hey," Jaxon makes a pointed move to his left, blocking me and putting us back in the same position. His blonde hair is slicked back with expensive gel as per usual, his skin tan and glowy. He's your typical definition of attractive, though it all seems so false this close- so ugly.

Jaxon's smirk turns into a cocky grin, catching me looking. "See something you like freak?"

"Only that lip gloss you've applied to that snotty grin of yours. Is that cherry crush?"
