untouchable

A Job

I fidget in the seat in front of the man interviewing me,

"So you have no experience?",the man asks for the second time,to clarify or to rub it in,I'm not sure.

I sit stiffly,eager for this to be over,"yes, that's correct".

The man knods,looking over the paperwork again before looking to me,"ok,so when can you start?".

I stare at him a moment before thinking quickly,"ah,right away,this week".

Is he giving me the job?

He nods,"okay,so here's how things go here,the clients come first and alot of them are notable people so watch your step,you don't want to step on their toes,get what I mean? ".

I knod becoming excited inside,I got the job? Is all I keep thinking as he continues on,

"Alright, your shift starts at 9am and...",he gets up to retrieve something from a box,"here's your uniform",he hands me a blue shirt with black slacks,"welcome to the "freshest and the finest",cassandra", he reaches out his hand to shake with me.

I return his handshake with a smile,"thank you".

After the interview I ran straight to the shelter to see tasha,she was very happy for me,"I knew you would girl!",she gives me another excited hug,as she'd done when I first told her my news.

I smile returning her hug,"so, I start tomorrow at 9",I state pulling out of the hug.

We sit in the office of the shelter,"that's great,you have all you need to start?", tasha asks.

I knod," yeah....", I didn't tell her that I actually wasn't sure how I'd get there for two weeks until I get my first paycheck,since I had to get there by bus.

Silence dropped between us as I said no more,so tasha went on,"okay then,so we've got to go out and celebrate, my families having a gathering tonight,wanna come?".

I hesitated,not liking the thought of a big family gathered,laughing and sharing memories while I sat by feeling like an outsider but before I could decline she cut in deciding for me,

"I'll take that as a yes", she says with an encouraging smile.

But not wanting to give in I was thankful to remember the check in time for the shelter,

"But the check in is at 4,so....", I left the rest off allowing her to register my meaning, though unfortunately that didn't stump her.

"Oh don't worry about it,you'll just have to sleep at my place,it'll be just like a slumber party",she gives me another smile,that to me looks like one of victory,knowing that I will be joining her and for the first time staying at her place which she's never been able to get me to do,with me avoiding burdening anyone and everything.

I squint at her,"your annoying, you know that ?".

She laughs in reply pushing me playfully, I shake my head smiling,maybe it's because of the success of today but for some reason I let go,not fighting any farther and I just decide to see what comes next,happily.
