Matt tried to sneak out that night to see Stephanie. He grabbed a beige canvas bag, just in case he woud need it, but he also remembered something else.
His science textbook, the one he created himself. He had no idea where it was, though. Afer a few minutes looking around the room, he finally saw the corner peeking out from under Virgil's pillow.
Matt pressed his lips together tightly and reached out for it. As soon as he moved it, though, Virgil woke up.
"What are you doing?" He groaned.
"Taking my book back." Matt whispered. "Go back to sleep."
"You don't need it in the middle of the night." Virgil had started to wake up slightly more, now seeing that Matt was fully dressed. Virgil sat up. "Where are you going?" He asked.
"Nowhere important." Matt said. "Now give me my book."
"Not until you tell me what you're doing."
Matt lowered his hands. "I met someone in the village, okay? She's... she's the princess. I promised that I would see her tonight."
"Are you insane!?"
Matt slapped a hand over Virgil's mouth. "Shh! And no, I'm not. I just want to give her my book." He slowly lowered his had.
Virgil hugged it tightly. "No way. You... you said I could keep it. Because we're best friends, right?"
"We are, Virg. It's just that... she's really smart, and I want to give her that book." Matt said.
Virgil looked hurt. He looked away. "If I give you this, you'll run off and get us all hurt."
"And yet, it never has." Matt said. His teeth were grinding together. "Why do you all hate curiosity so much? It's never hurt anyone."
"Because your curiosity will lead us all into a very dangerous place someday, and we can't afford that." Virgil said. "Sometimes, I wish that I had never met you."
Matt stopped. "You can't be serious, right Virgil? You don't really wish that."
"You're right. I don't. Not all the time. Just... sometimes. When you get into trouble, I wish that Jack had never asked me to take care of you." Virgil shoved the book into Matt's chest. "Go ahead and show your stupid princess."
"Fine. I'll be back in the morning." Matt said. Matt opened up the window and climbed onto the windowsill. "See you."
"Just go away." Virgil sat on the bed, hugging his knees and deliberately looking away from Matt.
Matt sighed and climbed out of the window carefully. As soon as he was out, Virgil stood up ad opened the door. He walked down the pitch black hallway, and knocked on one of the doors. Jack opened it. "Virgil? What's going on?"
Virgil's hands balled into fists, his head cast down and his teeth gritted. "We need to talk to Mayor Mark. Matt is in love with someone outside Hope Square."
