To my Darling Daughter Kallista

I am very sorry you haven't met me yet. Your father left me when I was pregnant with you and I couldn't raise you on my own. I saw you when you were a baby and I know you are as beautiful as you were then. You have the most beautiful blue eyes and brown hair. You have a petite figure and look like me. That is why I named you Kallista, it means 'most beautiful' in Greek.

I'm sorry I had to give you this life, but honey, please be strong for me. My name is Katie and I was eighteen when I gave birth to you. When you were born you meant the world to me. You gave the sweetest little cry and wrapped your tiny hand around my finger. It felt so good that I could finally hold you in my arms. The people at the hospital refused to let me take you home because I wasn't married. They only left me with one choice, to give you to another family. They gave me a list of willing families in the city, but I knew there was only one place I could ever send you.

I decided to send you to my friend's aunty because I knew you would be safe there. It was well out of the city and in a place hard to find. I know you think you might have it rough, but honey, you are much luckier staying with her family than me or any other family in the city. The city is called Immunda and is a horrible place to live. I still live there, but whatever you do, don't come looking for me.

From Katie.
