March 1973
I was nervous, to say the least, as I walked down the path of the house Harry told me to come for rehearsal. He told me to show up just to learn the songs and I can make a decision afterward.
My mother's husband moved in a few days ago and the house reeked of awkwardness and I didn't want to be there anymore. So here was my ticket out of hell and into a world where I belonged.
I knocked on the front door and looked down to straighten out my pants. I had gone out shopping and bought a new pair of striped bellbottoms and a pair of red platforms. I curled my hair and I thought I looked very cute. Scotty said I looked great as well but I was still nervous.
The door opened and a woman stood there wearing a very tight dress and a pair of thigh-high boots. "Can I help you?" She said sweetly.
This woman looked like a hooker.
"I'm looking for the band?" She gasped nodding and letting me in.
"The boys are in the garage, would you like a drink of water or maybe some tea for your voice?" I nodded thanking her as she poured hot water into a mug and added a tea bag. She pointed to where I should go before thanking her, making my way towards the wooden door of Josh's garage. The door was open and as I pushed it farther I noticed that the music I was hearing was coming from Harry's guitar.
He sat with his back to me while the guys all stood by a paper and argued over something back and forth. I recognized the song he was playing and admired how he had his eyes closed so into the music. "Smoke on the water?" The guitar stopped and all the guys turned to me as I took a sip of tea.
"Hey!" Harry smiled standing up to walk over to me. He had on a dark pair of high waisted jeans and a muscle t-shirt. He seemed to be the only one actually wearing a shirt, unlike all the guys who quickly began to put theirs back on. It was quite warm in here so I understood why'd they want to be shirtless.
"I love that song," I stated pointing to his guitar.
"Yeah it's a good album- uh you remember the guys right." I nodded walking over to Mitch first who leaned in for a hug. "Billie, Josh, and that's pink." I raised an eyebrow.
"I thought it was Greg?" Harry chuckled as the band set up.
"It's a nickname, we all have our own color we go by. Green, pink, orange, red, and uh blue." He pointed to himself. I smiled as they all made jokes and tuned their instruments. Harry pulled me aside and had a paper with him with lyrics to a song. "Alright, kinda wrote this a while ago and well Anthony hated it. Maybe you could sing this today and just get a feel of what we play." I placed all my hair to the side and began to braid it.
"What if I suck?" he chuckled.
"Believe me, you might, but that's what rehearsal is about." he pinched my cheek before walking over to the guys and clearing his throat. "Alright boys from the top, I'll sing and you listen." he pointed towards me.
