Darkness.

Darkness is often seen as its own entity. A separate part of the world, of nature, that is considered to be made up of the dregs of humanity. The abominations of nature.

But there is another perspective; one that most people often forget. Nobody is inherently evil. The dregs of humanity and the abominations of nature never choose to be what they are. They can only control what they become. How they react to the world; whether they allow themselves to be shaped by the world and the trials that they face in life, or shape themselves into the person they have always longed to be.

Despite this, people often see them as atrocities, obscenities, and monstrosities. They are outcasts, loners, forever looking to belong.

Some like being outcasts. They are simply created to feel content when alone. They thrive in the emptiness.

Others hate the fact that they live in solitude. They become angry with the people that rejected them, and begin to lash out at both the guilty and the innocent.

And then there are those who desperately look for a place to belong. Some find what they are looking for while others do not.

I used to think like the others do. That those who belonged to the darkness were a disgrace, and that they needed to be cleansed from the world for the sake of humanity.

I was wrong.

After all, isn't darkness, true darkness, simply the absence of light?
