remember me

warning: angst

Remember me when you're lying in bed and cannot fall asleep.

Remember me when the world is against you, and the light never shines in your favor.

Remember me when everything swarms the abyss.

Remember me.

It was (Y/n)'s favorite poem. Written by Pidge's mother, those words never failed to bring the girl to tears. The deeper meaning in each syllable held such a depth of knowledge and past experience, that (Y/n) couldn't wait to read more.

The sun began to set, clouds slowly dispersing into other locations to take their rest. And the tranquil view from (Y/n)'s window was even more mesmerizing then the day before.

The comforting silence that followed along with every movement sent (Y/n) into a daze, and she happily sighed, leaning back into her pillow. Soft music - Fool, by Cavetown - was similar to a lullaby, and she couldn't get enough of the smooth undertone in the lyrics.

I am just a Fool to keep on chasing after nothing great.

You are just a Fool to keep pretending that you're loving me.

I don't know...

Where I'm supposed to go.

The front door creaked open, a small sound of the doorknob twisting and turning furiously. Hearing the alarming sound, (Y/n) shot up from her bed, the floorboards below her sending out a loud sound, directing the perpetrator towards her.

(Y/n)'s husband - Keith Kogane - was currently at his job, working as a high class pilot. He said he'd be home by the next morning, but (Y/n) desperately wished for him to pop in through the window.

Loud footsteps reverberated through the house, almost frantically. A metallic object dropped to the floor, and (Y/n) identified that sound as a bullet. The difference wasn't too hard to tell.

Silently, the girl opened her phone and texted Keith,

'Someone is in the house. Call the police'

And then the click of a gun brought (Y/n) out of her shocked state.

Along with a bullet aligned to her chest.

Keith sat down at a nearby table, dragging out his sandwich from the small lunchbag he'd brought along with him. It was time for break, and Keith was excited to arrive home to his wife tomorrow.

Everytime he'd think of her, the words "remember me" crossed his mind. The poem did speak volumes to him, but he couldn't see the meaning that (Y/n) could see. Though he knew it meant a lot to her, so he never mentioned anything.

A ping rattled the small button on his back pocket, and he begrudgingly took out his phone, swiping open the lock screen which showed both (Y/n) and Keith's pictures on it.

A small notification arrived at the top, and he slid the bar down further. He scanned the message carefully, every syllable sounding out in his mind. A lump suddenly caught in his throat.

And, with a sense of regret, he looked at the contact name above the message.

"💞(Y/n)💞"

The sandwich he'd been holding suddenly fell from his hand. Keith wasn't able to find the strength to hold the phone or the food - his hands began to shake immensely - and his eyes widened to the size of saucers.

The condements in the sandwich scattered across the table, hitting his hand. He flinched, drawing back and standing up to an off posture. He grabbed his phone and bag, running to the parking lot to retrieve his car.

If he'd called 9/11, it'd operate to his location and his area code, not hers. But that seemed to be the least of his worries.

Keith grabbed the steering wheel tightly, speeding off onto the highway, almost immediately getting a ticket. But instead of abiding by the law he completely passed the cop. The Bluetooth on his car began to ring loudly, but only a voice message answered.

"You've reached (Y/n) Kogane! Please leave a message after the be-"

"(Y/n)! (Y/n), please, I need you to answer me. I'm heading home right now, please answer me and tell me that you're alright!" Keith cried out, tears pouring down his face. He couldn't help but think of all the possible outcomes; what if she'd gotten kidnapped, hurt, or even worse

killed?

No, he couldn't think that way. (Y/n) had always taught him to think of the positives in any situation,

even if it seemed like the world was against him.

Remember me.

The solidified gravestone in front of Keith sent an eerie message, and the rain pouring down onto his already soaked head made the scene seem like an old romantic movie.

But he couldn't compare it to the happy endings he'd usually seen in those. Because he'd never received his happy ending, not after she had died.

"(Y/n) Kogane.

Forever in our hearts.

????-????

Remember me when you're lying in bed and cannot fall asleep.

Remember me when the world is against you, and the light never shines in your favor.

Remember me when everything swarms the abyss.

Remember me."

And that final saying, encrypted onto the stone, haunted him from the day he'd lost her.

Keep the people you love close to you, because you never know when they'll stray away.
