Why is my training class always interrupted? If it isn’t one of the kids running around naked its someone missing, or attacking me! Thoughts swirled around aimlessly in her head as she slowly came to.
Crickets woke her that night. She was laying down on the field next to the training grounds under a few blankets. She touched her head and felt a wet towel resting on her forehead. “Wha-“ her voice cracked from being so dry.
“Considering you’re a teacher, you are not very bright.”
She turned her head, but instantly regretted it when a nauseating pounding began. “Who is it?”
By the comment, Clair had first assumed it was Noble, but the voice to too deep, too manly.
He seemed to consider it a few seconds, “They call me Jace.” He handed her a cup of warm water.
She touched the towel and pulled it off with a lot of effort. “Why am I outside, on the ground and wrapped like a burrito?”
Jace laughed, “You are outside because you fainted. I want to say that it was an anxiety attack. You’re on the ground because Noble couldn’t lift you and take you to the bedroom, so instead he made a dozen trips or so to get you comfortable, then being the worrier he is, he wrapped you up so that you wouldn’t get cold, then I sent him back to sleep.”
“Who are you?”
“I’m Myself.”
Clair turned to face the person, but he sat far enough away that Clair couldn’t see him clearly. She could make out his shoulder length hair and broad chest. He looked so dark and dangerous in the shadows, it made Clair shiver.
“Come closer,” she said, but he didn’t listen.
Jace turned his head towards the forest, “I finished my part here, you’re well enough to get back.
Clair did her best to pick out the details of his face from that angle, but nothing other than the shape of his nose and lips were obvious.
He turned back to face her, “See something you like?” he asked amused.
“I can’t really see much at the moment,” she refuted.
“That’s because you’re one-track minded, open up a little and you might see something else.”
Clair groaned and pushed the blankets off of her, ignoring the pounding in her head. “Get lost, I don’t know where you came from but it’s clear you get along with Noble.” She stood up and began to collect everything Noble had brought out for her.
“Oh yes,” he said, “we are just as close as you and Don were.”
Clair fumbled with what she had in her hands, “How do you know about that-“ she stopped when she saw that no one was there anymore.
He disappeared like a ghost.
Clair cried out and pulled at her hair, “Why is everyone here so creepy!” she clutched everything close to her chest and stormed back home.
When she slammed the door open, she could see Noble lying on the new bed that had been brought in the morning. The candles flickered, sending shadows over the room.
“How are you feeling?”
“Peachy, just preachy,” she growled.
He leaned forward, “I’m sorry, I’m not big enough to carry you and your baggage!”
“What baggage, and I’m not mad about that.”
“If I can’t carry a normal person, how am I supposed to do so with your chest and bottom added to the equation? Then why are you mad?”
