The moment everyone was in class, Clair ran to where she had last seen the headmaster. Upon arriving, he and the child stepped out of the forest talking softly to each other like they were old friends.
He looked up with a frown, “Clair, you waited for us? Classes are about to start,” he noticed her changed attire and lifted an eyebrow, “Or you’ve been running around all morning.”
It wasn’t a question.
She looked down, “I wanted to apologize for earlier, I was being rash and disrespectful to your decisions.
“I accept your apology,” he clasped his hands together, “I was also thinking about your words and I came to a conclusion.”
Clair looked at him questioningly.
“So,” he continued, “I am going to listen to you from now on,”
She opened her mouth to speak but he cut her off, “I’ve been hoping to retire for many years now, and I was about to until Don died, but now that you seem to be more than willing to do my job for me, I can step back with ease.”
Even though he was speaking calmly, Clair couldn’t help but think that he was mad past comprehension.
“But that wasn’t my intention; I was just voicing a complaint.”
“You know what Don would do, and I trusted him, meaning I can trust you. From now on you are in charge of everything and everyone.”
“I can’t do something like that.”
“You can learn. The only thing you are not in charge of is who stays and who goes, whoever enters remains until further warning. Take Noble to his classes, you are his guide for the day.” He turned around and began walking away until he reached the trees, “Don’t make me regret my choice.”
When the headmaster disappeared, Noble grabbed onto Clair’s hand, “Good Day, master.”
Clair forced a smile, he mocking me! “Good morning,” she ground out, “Pay attention in class, you’re already behind.”
“Don’t worry about me, I’ll be just fine. And I’d be more worried about you and every other person in the school.”
Good point.
Sighing, Clair thrust her hand out to Noble.
He looked at it like it was a snake, “What?”
“Let me see your classes,” she pushed her hands out farther.
Rolling his eyes, Noble continued to walk, “Unlike your kids I know what to do,” he scrutinized Clair, “Just follow me and you won’t get lost.”
Crossing her arms across her chest and ambled behind him, doing her best not to open the ground he walked over and making him fall in. When they entered the building, they turned on the first hall. Their steps echoing much louder now that everyone was in their classes, she tried to walk lighter but the concrete barred her attempts.
“Why are you still following me?” Noble muttered.
Clair could help but let out a loud groan, “I’m making sure you don’t get lost before you get to class, and then I have to make sure that the teacher doesn’t think you’re an intruder and kill you as a result.” Using the look she always gave to the defiant kids, “And you would help both of us it you would show me which teacher you were assigned to.”
“Even if I didn’t know a thing about this school, finding a teacher would be the easiest task” he smirked, and as an afterthough he added, “considering there are only 10, and just three are in my age group. Not including the physical trainer, you. Leaving only two, and he is the one down this certain hall. So if you think about it a little you should know which class I’m going into.”
