Chapter 11: The Arena and a Flying Knife

The next day was busy. We were rushed around and I was already on my way to the hovercraft. Enobaria looked at me and said, “Do whatever it takes to win. Fight, kill, lie, cheat, whatever.” I nodded. I quickly gave her a hug. We hadn’t really gotten close the past days, but she technically was in charge of whether or not I died. She patted my back and I stepped away from her arms. She smiled down at me.         You can do it Clove. Don’t under estimate yourself. Now, go.” She shooed me off and I walked towards the hovercraft. A ladder was thrown down and I grabbed onto it. I was frozen in place and was scared. I think I started to hyperventilate, but soon I was on the floor of the hovercraft. I was seated by Fire-girl and I saw Cato across from me four people down. I glanced at him, but didn’t make a point to actually look. I saw Fire-girl look at me, so I glared at her. She quickly looked away, cowering.

When we landed I was taken to an underground room where I met Alyc. He helped my into a maroon rain jacket. He handed me my mom’s bracelet. “Thanks you.” The little voice goes off that says we have 10 more seconds left. I walk to the tube where I will rise into the arena. I step onto the plat form and watch the glass tube conceal me. I start to rise and there is a sudden blast of bright white lights. Then, my vision comes into focus and I see to my left I see a forest. To my right I see a field of shoulder high grass. The countdown has started from sixty. I won’t step off my plat form because I don’t want to be blowed to smithereens. It was the final ten seconds. 

10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1

I spot a pack of knives and sprint to them. I open them and see a beautiful array of knives. I look up and see the boy from nine going after Fire-girl. I quickly throw a knife at his back because I was promised if I could kill her, I would. I didn’t want some other lesser tribute to. Then, I threw another knife at her but she moved her pack to block her face. I wanted to scream because I was so close to killing her. Then I realize that I had the first kill of the games. I look around and see most of the tributes dead and Cato, Marvel, and Glimmer fighting off the rest. I ran to help them and threw my knives at any coming tributes.

                I looked around again and saw most of the tributes dead. We were the only living tributes around. I looked from Marvel to Glimmer then to Cato. They were covered in blood, but I was spotless. Glimmer was looking at me. “Maybe she shouldn’t be a Career. Look at her; she’s not even covered in blood.” Before thinking I chucked a knife at her. I knew it wouldn’t hit her because I had perfect aim. She screamed. I glared at her.

                “Says the girl who runs screaming from a knife. Maybe you should rethink who should not be the Career.” I turn around and walk away. Cato and Marvel follow at me but Glimmer just stood there, stunned. I smiled to myself. I looked around and saw that they weren’t anywhere by me. Then I heard a voice right by my ear. “Good job, Clove.” I smile because I know its Cato. I turn and see him smiling a tight smile. It wasn’t a real one because he couldn’t show the Capitol his feelings for me because the cameras were most likely on us. “We should go try to get all the food we can.” I say. He walks away and gathers up everything he can fit into his arms. He walked over to Marvel, who was setting up camp and told him to pick up some food. He finished setting up the tarp that was connected to four poles that went into the ground and gather some food. Glimmer was pouting next to the tarp. I smirked at her when I past her. Cato ran up to the cornucopia and took a sword and a spear. He motioned for Marvel and I to pick something too. I walk up and grab every knife in there and neatly place them in a vest I got too. I had a nice array of knives, some on the inside, and some on the outside.

It was growing dark so we headed out into the woods. We saw the distant light of a fire. Cato turned to us and smiled at us. “Are you ready for a kill?” I looked around at everyone else and saw they were smiling too. Glimmer shoved me out of the way and walked with Cato. Cato was in front of us, leading us, and Glimmer and Marvel were in front of me. I was in the back trying to keep up with everyone. They reached her and Glimmer handed Cato his sword. The girl who had the fire looked back at us. She screamed and Cato cut her head off. Her cannon went off and she lied limp on the ground. Everyone started laughing, but I stayed silent. We passed under a few trees and made our way back to the cornucopia. We slept on the ground that night and there were no problems. We watched the faces of the Fallen come up in the sky and think of the ones we killed. I look over and search for Cato. I didn’t see him. I also didn’t see Glimmer. “Where are Cato and Glimmer?” I asked Marvel. He shrugged and laid down, closing his eyes. I mumbled thanks and turned over. I closed my eyes and tried to dream, but all I saw was red. Blood. All the blood was coming back.
