I woke up to a shaking. I opened one of my eyes to see Cato shaking my shoulders. “Clove, you need to get up.” He mumbled. I looked around and saw it was still dark.
“What time is it, Cato?” He looked up at the sky.
“About 3 am. Only a few more hours before its dawn.” He strapped on a belt and slid his sword in it. “Remember, I won’t be far from here, just scouting out the place. As soon as you see her, you charge. You can’t let a chance as good as this one slip through your fingers.” I rolled my eyes.
“I know Cato. You tell me every time we talk about her.” I smiled, thinking about how if I did get her, we’d be one step closer to home and that the toughest tribute was out. I slid my best knives into my vest and grabbed a dainty looking knife. I hadn’t used this one, thought I use it for a special occasion. I slid it in my pocket just for safe measure. We were all ready. I looked at Cato and ran into his arms. “I love you Cato.”
“I love you too, Clove. Be safe out there. I’ll have your back. I’m just a yell away.” I stood on my toes and kissed him. He kissed back, but we soon had to go. I ran to the outer part of the cornucopia where the woods met the bare area. I hid behind a bush and watched as a table rose out of the ground. There were four packs on it. One with the number 2, one with a 5, another with a 11, and the last had 12. Out of nowhere a flash of red came into my vision. Before I could put my head on it and realize it was Foxface, she was already gone. Fire-girl would come next. She sprinted out of the woods and up to the table. I jumped out from behind my bush and flung a knife at her. She hit the ground, but got back up with her tiny pack. I chased after her until I finally reached her. I slammed my body into hers and tackled her to the ground. I brought out a knife and jabbed it down toward her, but she moved her head out of the way. She pushed me off of her. She was at least two years older than me. I tackled her again, but this time I put my feet on her hands and sat on her chest looking down at her. I smiled. “Well, well, well, if it isn’t Katniss. What’s in the pack? Medicine for Lover-boy?” I laughed. “He won’t make it much longer. Cato knows where he cut him. I’m truly; truly surprised that he has made it this long. The blood poisoning should have reached his heart by now.” I pointed my index finger at her heart. “I don’t know how you managed to keep him alive this long.” I smiled at her again and she struggled, trying to get up. I kicked her leg and she whimpered. I pulled out a knife and held it against her neck. “If you hadn’t guessed by now, we’re going to kill you. We’re going to kill you just like we killed your pathetic little ally. What was her name? The one who hoped around in the trees? Rue? Well, we killed her, and now we’re going to kill you.” I pulled out the dainty knife and held it against her lips. “Want to blow Lover-boy one last kiss?” I hissed at her. I brought the knife back, getting ready to kill her when an incredibly strong force pulled me off of her. Thresh held me in his hand and he was a lot bigger and scarier up close. He flung me to the ground. “You kill her? You kill Rue?” I scrambled back, shaking my head.
“No, no!” I panted. “I didn’t kill her.”
“You were talking about her. You cut her up like you were gonna cut up this girl?” He pointed at Katniss. I shook my head again. He was coming towards me.
“Cato! Cato!” I screamed for him. I looked at Thresh and saw in his hand he had a rock. “Cato!!!” I screeched. “Clove!” He yelled, but he was far away. The rock crushed against my skull. I fell against the ground with a thud. My vision was swimming. I heard Thresh talking to Katniss. He was letting her go. I was paralyzed and couldn’t get up. I stared at the grass in front of my eyes. “Clove!” Cato yelled again, sounding much closer now. I heard the little footsteps of Katniss running away. I didn’t know if Thresh was still here or not. “Clove!” Cato was right beside me. A weight grasped my hand and I realized that he was holding it. He rolled me over so I was laying on my back. I could see his face, sort of. It was blurry and getting more blurry by the minute. “Oh Clove! I can’t believe I let this happen to you.” I tried to shake my head, but I couldn’t. I could only blink and move my mouth.
“No, Cato.” My voice came out rusty and wore-down. “It’s not your fault. Mine.” I couldn’t make full sentences anymore. “I….love….you.” I managed to get out. Cato was crying hard.
“I love you too, Clove. This is my entire fault. I shouldn’t have put you in danger.” My eyes were starting to get drowsy. They wanted to close them but I tried to keep them open. My eyes closed and I mustered up all the breath I could and manage to say “Thank…..you.” My arms went slack and I knew it was the end. I could hear the distant cries of Cato, begging me to stay. I wish I could comfort him and tell him to stop. You have to let go sometime. But I couldn’t. I felt slight pressure on my wrist. What was Cato doing? A cold circle slipped off my hand. It was my mom’s bracelet. Cato was taking it with him? Everything turned from red to black. My heart gave one last beat. I gave one last breath. And then I was gone.
