CHAPTER FOUR
; Red
It seemed all fuzzy and warm once I remember it... But I guess it's like snow. It's pretty and soft, but it's really, really cold and it melts once you touch it. This memory always sinks deeper, out of reach, whenever I try to remember it. Let's try to explain it, shall we?
The sun's rays raced down my back as I ran across the beach, far away from my house. Summertime was always my favorite part of the year. No school or anything, just free time and playing around. Of course, it doesn't last. Nothing great lasts forever, even if you want it to.
A girl, with a straw hat placed in her hair, came running down the hills, bumping right into me and pulling both of us down onto the warm sand. Her hat slipped down to reveal silky, blond hair.
"What's the rush?" I asked her, catching her hat before helping the both of us back up. "Did something happen?"
"Sort of," the girl shrugged. Her brown eyes matched up to mine. I already knew who it was. You can probably already tell from the straw hat, but this was Yellow, the girl that I... It's kind of awkward since I was fourteen and she was twelve, but we kind of dated. Kind of. It's like being best friends but on rare chances comes hugs and short kisses. "You see, I'm moving soon."
My eyes widened as I stuttered the words, "What? Why? How? When?" Yellow giggled, causing my heart to almost leap out of its cage. Boy was she cute... "I mean... You aren't leaving soon, are you? It's the start of summer. I thought you, me, and Green were going to play this year. Together." My voice sounded squeaky and weak, even to myself. I guess it was that much of a shock to me, even though her skills weren't that much of a secret anymore.
"Yeah, I know," she nodded, and the smile disappeared from her face. She used her right arm to wipe her forehead, which was beaded in sweat.
I felt bad for questioning her, especially since she raced all the way through Pallet Town to find me. "But I'm leaving soon. You see, there's a daycare in-I think-Kalos that I have to help. I told you about my powers, right? That I can heal Pokemon?" I just nodded because I wanted her to continue. I needed to understand. "Yeah, so... They need me there. There's a lot of Pokemon that the elderly couple who runs the daycare need to heal and raise."
"Does, uhm... Does Green know?" I asked. I caught myself, and frowned a little. Why was I interested in him? This was about Yellow.
The blonde looked at me worriedly. "Is something wrong?" I noticed she was staring at my face, so I stopped frowning. Are my expressions that weird?
"Huh? Oh. Nah," I smiled and ruffled her hair, shocking her, but then she seemed to enjoy it. "Just wondering about something. So did you tell Green yet? I mean... Uh, he's one of your best friends right?"
Yellow giggled again. "Yeah. I told him. Are you jealous?" Her brown eyes glinted with a mysterious charm.
I shrugged and laughed. So that was the feeling...? "Maybe I am," I answered. And then I added self-consciously, "What? Is it weird? Am I weird?"
This just made Yellow giggle again, as she ducked under my hand so it'll stop getting tangled in her hair. "No, you'e not weird. You're close sometimes." She stood on her tiptoes and kissed my cheek, which made my face flush a deep shade of red. "But you're less an idiot than Green."
"Me?" That took me by surprise. Green was so much more smarter than me. I knew that even though we were rivals, and we didn't really accept the other's individuality. Especially since that other person would just use their talents and skills and use it against mine. And even though that comment was supposed to make me feel less like a loser, I added in Green's defense, "I guess. But Green's also really smart."
Yellow laughed and nodded. "Yeah, he is."
I reached my hand out, and she absentmindedly intertwined it with hers. We were kind of used to doing little gestures like that, so we barely even notice our connecting hands as I led her back to Pallet Town. "You still haven't told me exactly when you're leaving, y'know?"
She sighed. I averted my eyes to focus on her face, to see if she was upset. But when she gazed back at me, she was smiling. "I can't leave anything secret, can I?" Her eyes seemed to tease me but... Her face fell as she added, "I'm leaving tomorrow."
My hand went slack as it fell from Yellow's grasp. "W-What?" I asked her, my voice barely higher than a rat's squeak. "Tomorrow?"
"Sorry..." Yellow replied sadly, kicking the dirt beneath her sandals. "I guess I should've told you sooner... But I got it in the PC today, when I was checking up on Chuchu. It's better I leave soon." She nodded to herself then looked up at me. She winced, little enough for no one else to see, but I've known her long enough to know the littlest movements caused by her. "Sorry again. Don't cry."
I stared at her, and softened my gaze. There must've been a lot of pain described in my eyes. But Yellow smiled at me again. A beautiful, adoring smile that shown her personalities. But her eyes stayed sad and lonely, unwanted, as if she was waiting for the right person to fix it. I want to be that person... But looking back, I'm not so sure if I could.
She took her hat in her hands, held it in front of my face, and kissed me. This was probably the first time ever that it was on the lips, and she covered the romantic moment with her hat. It blocked out the kiss from other people's eyes, but certainly not mine. I blushed bright red when she broke away.
That happy, romantic moment? It didn't stay for long. When Yellow said her last words to me, her last words I'll probably hear for the next few years, it broke me.
"It's okay, because I'm not the one you'd truly love."
She was right.
