Introduction:

Running naked in a land where no mere mortal dare to tread, where no mere mortal ever should tread and where the tree is master of all it surveys. In the dense mist of dawning the high pitched laughter rang loud, echoing throughout the vast and eerie space within which there was no place for sweetness and light.Still and silent, dew like silver raindrops clung for as long as was possible onto anything and everything strong enough to hold its invisible weight.A leaf.A blade of grass and A spider's web.Glistening like speckles of stardust, natures' morning cleanser hung on until the bitter end, dissolving slowly with the application of heat as the sun rose, shinning its rays onto everything below.

By day this land was white and by night it was black. Once all daylight faded, this place turned grey before becoming as black as black could ever possibly be.By day the sun shone bright and strong, by night the light of the full moon illuminated all it touched, casting far and wide the shadows made by those born to roam.Forever round and always full, both the sun and the moon would set high in the moving skies.Like a sketch etched in an artist pad, this was a place filled with meaning, texture and mysteries ripe for interpretation.Everywhere there were lines and shapes, but unless one looked close; there was no visible sign of life.

Naked and barefoot, each had no need for clothes, their skin was tough and required little protection. They were young and in the light of day they were in love. By day the two could walk hand in hand.'Well, matched.'The provider approved.Naked, there was no shame.None hid nor shied from others because by day one was forbidden to compete or compare.By day the elders would rest, sleep being what they needed, the absence of senior supervision allowing the youngsters to play.

"I want you tonight."Herne whispered, but by night there would be no words.By night there would be no affection and no place for emotions.By night and on every night, the beast would emerge and emotions would hide.Barefoot despite the ground being rugged, by night most would wear coats.

In the far away, far off land where no man, woman or child dared to venture; the provider wanted things to change.'He: wasn't one of them.'And what he wanted, he wanted for himself as much as for any other.'A wise man?'The lone male longing to return to his once normal, natural existence, in the same way he had entered theirs, the provider wanted the beast to enter his world.A transition, the mixing of beast with man.Any such experiment was not something to be undertaken lightly, there would be rules to follow and laws which must be obeyed. In the neighbouring, unknown land where no mere mortal should ever venture and would never have need to be, things had to change.

Herne and Zadie were an obvious choice. In their land the two would be together until such time that they would part.Together, as one until death do them separate, Herne would be leader until another, wiser, stronger and fiercer opponent stepped forth.'A couple?'In their land the two were competent, confident, loyal and brave, but what would happen out there? Outside, the couple who were familiar with one another would continue to take on one another forever and live together for life.Outside, the two would be known to those they met as being a husband and his wife.'Mr. & Mrs.'Were to be their new titles and Wood would be their surname.Away from what was familiar there would be new rules to follow.New, stricter rules would be implemented and those rules must be obeyed if they were to be the first. For the survival of their kind, those chosen could not afford to fail.'A family?'A family would be less conspicuous and when told what they should do, all trusted that the provider knew best.
