Bobby opened his eyes as sun pooled in from a window.
"Good morning, Bobby," he heard a soothing female voice say. It had come from his phone on his bedside table.
"Good morning, Eileen." He leaned up in bed and sniffed the air. He smiled and hopped out of bed, grabbing his phone.
"Do I smell bacon?" Bobby asked as he entered the kitchen.
"Yes, you do," Eileen responded through his phone.
"Not you, Eileen."
Obsidia laughed as she cooked breakfast. Her smile was brighter than the sun. Bobby couldn't help but to smile back at her.
"You're really likin' that thing, huh?"
"Hell yeah." Bobby sat at their island. The kitchen was small, and the island was their "table." Just two chairs in front of it, the island itself took up half of the room. The other half was dominated by the fridge, cabinets, a sink, and a gas range. The kitchen was the smallest room in their apartment, yet they couldn't complain since it was theirs.
Bobby looked at his phone as Obsidia flipped pancakes on a skillet.
"You mind helping me out for a sec--"
"This thing is just awesome, Dia," he interjected. "Just watch this." He pushed his phone across the island to her. She sighed and looked at it. "Eileen, show me what I ate for dinner last night."
The screen showed a first-person view of Bobby eating a slice of pizza next to Obsidia as she wiped her mouth.
"Pretty cool." She passed the phone back to him and turned back to the food on the stove.
"Pretty cool? No, it's pretty awesome." He picked up the phone. "Eileen, what did I smell when I woke up two weeks ago?"
The screen is covered with darkness which then opens up to reveal light. Bobby heard himself sniff the air through the phone.
"Cinnamon rolls," Eileen said. Bobby salivated at the thought of it.
"Dia," he said as she pulled two plates from a cabinet.
She exhaled. "What, Bobby?"
"She remembers my dreams too. Watch--"
"Bobby, honey, can you just put the phone down for a second and help me out. I gotta get to work soon."
"Oh. Okay." He put his phone down and rose from his seat. He helped her put the food onto the plates. She glanced at him as he plated the food. A frown plastered his face and he wouldn't look at her. His movements were quick and harsh.
"Bobby, please don't act childish. This isn't a big deal." He moved the plates to the island.
Obsidia's hands went to her hips. "Don't ignore me." He ripped two pieces of paper towel from a roll beside the sink and put them next to the plates.
"Bobby." He opened the utensil cabinet and pulled out a couple forks and knives. He placed them on top of the pieces of paper towel.
Obsidia grabbed his arm. He looked her in her beautiful hazel eyes. "Bobby. Stop acting childish."
"I'm not acting childish," he grumbled.
"Yes, you are. I understand that this thing--"
"Eileen."
"I understand that Eileen is cool and all, but I don't have time to hear about her. You can tell me about her later if it makes you feel better, but not right now."
"I got her for us."
"And I appreciate that." She sat down on one of the island chairs in front of a plate. "But you've had this thing for only three days now, and it's still all you wanna talk about. Just... calm down a little."
He nodded. He sat down in the seat next to her and they began to eat. Silence enveloped the apartment for a few minutes before Bobby withdrew from his reluctance.
"I remember our anniversary now," he said. "I remember seeing you circle it on the calendar. Eileen showed me it last night."
Obsidia said nothing, yet the lack of words still hurt Bobby.
"I'm not perfect. I know. I have a bad memory, I'm childish, I got a little too frazzled sometimes... but I'm trying. I got Eileen so that I could improve myself. I know I should know when our anniversary is, and what you said last night, and to pay the bills, and where we agreed to have dinner... but it's just hard."
"I appreciate that you're trying," she said. "Speaking of, did you remember to pay the bills yesterday?"
Bobby nodded. "All I had to do was say it aloud and Eileen reminded me when the time came. She's great. I won't forget anything now."
"Well, what's the point of remembering anything then?"
She glanced at the stitches on his neck covering up where her father had put Eileen. "Are you putting in any effort yourself, or is she just remembering everything for you?"
Bobby furrowed his brows. "Of course I'm putting in effort. Why wouldn't I be?"
"I dunno, Bobby. Just asking." She finished her meal and put her plate in the sink. "I gotta go." She kissed him on the forehead. "I'll see you tonight. Remember to water my plants before you go to work."
"Eileen, remind me to water Dia's plants before I go to work."
"Reminder set," Eileen's voice chimed. Bobby smiled at Obsidia. She smiled back and left.
He finished his meal and put his plate in the sink. He quickly got dressed and ready for the day. He looked at himself in the mirror as he readied to head out. He was wearing his all-black Reggie's Diner uniform and a fake smile on his face. "Hi, I'm Bobby, your waiter, how can I help you today," he practiced. His smile was quickly replaced with a frown.
He walked to the front door to leave when his phone dinged.
"Reminder: water Dia's plants before you leave to work," Eileen's soft voice said.
"Thank you, Eileen."
He grabbed the small plastic watering can from beside one of the plants and watered Obsidia's two plants, money trees or Cash and Rich as she had named them. He left the house with his eyes on his phone, excited that Eileen helped him out once again.
