Chapter 4: This Is So Not How I Expected
The dog conversation never got picked back up. But to bring some happiness back into my life, the week after graduation, they finally let me go on a hunt. Of course there were some conditions but they were nothing that was out of the normal- apply for at least 3 colleges, refresh on your hunting knowledge, be sure you could take anything on, and lastly make sure I had each of their backs.
I applied for Kansas State College, Nebraska College, and South Dakota College. Main reason for choosing these, were so I could stay around my family but still sort of be on my own. Why South Dakota College? Well, our ‘Uncle’ Bobby lives around 39 miles away from the college! He was also like a father to the boys and I. He let us stay there and he taught us so many skills that we use to this day. He runs the Singer Salvage Yard in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I’m about 100% sure he’d let me stay there for school!
There are many steps to “solving” a case. First, we have to find somewhere that are having strange deaths or just weird stuff that are happening there. One point of importance: if you’ve already been there on a case, don’t go, I’ll explain soon. Then, go and investigate the witnesses and victims. Next, we try and figure out what we’re dealing with and how to gank (kill) it. Finally, we find the monster and let it meet it’s maker!
*Monday after graduation:*
“Okay, so uh.. get this. Two teenagers found outside the state line of Illinois into Kentucky…” Sam informed us. Sam had been looking for cases all morning and finally found one and was telling us what he had found.
“So? How is this our kinda thing?” Dean questioned.
“Well, if you would’ve let me finish… the teens were found dead, with a strange blue hand print on their left arms, and their insides… uh… get this… liquified.” Sam responded to Dean.
“Uh… I think I see why it’s our kinda thing, Dean. Most people’s insides aren’t smoothies, well at least everyone I met weren’t.” I snapped at Dean.
“Well thanks, Captain Stupid!” He shot back at me, glaring. “I didn’t need a snarky comment from you!” He was still glaring to the point I was feeling like he was trying to read my mind to see why the sudden outburst.
“Fine. Whatever. Can we just get back to the case?” I turned around to face Sam instead of Dean, obviously annoyed. I wasn’t quite sure why but I didn’t want to dwell on the thought.
“Guys! What is it with you two recently? You’ve been at each other’s throats more than usual! Bet? Dean? What’s up? Time for share and tell.” Sam was trying desperately to get to the bottom of the bickering. It wasn’t like us to fight so much; sure we fought like normal siblings but normally not as frequent.
“Nothing!” Dean and I said in unison. I had more attitude to my voice. Sam heard it and told me to go outside and cool off. When I was angry, I usually started throwing punches. If you so much as looked at me wrong, you had better start walking in the other direction.
I walked out into the back yard to sit in one of the 3 wooden swings we had made when I was younger. Each swing had a different height. The one on the far left was closest to the ground, the middle was at a taller distance, while the one on the right was way too high for me to reach. As you can tell, they can remind you of The Three Bears. My swing, Dean’s, then Sammy’s. When I would grow, they would make the swing my height. Now at about 5’4”, I could finally reach Dean’s swing although he is 6’1”.
