Edward
"BRING IN THE SUBJECTS!" Jess's voice sounded over the intercom. Everyone in the room tensed up as Jess's assistants came in to get the "lucky people" to go into the portal. I wasn't scared. I didn't care if I got picked. I would prefer not to be picked, but if I did, no big deal. The problem was my friend, Hailey. She grabs my arm and I can feel her shaking. We have been friends ever sense she walked into the door of the Bounty Orphanage. And now, here we are together. But who knows? This might be the last time we see each others face. Our fate is completely and utterly up the the scientist. And I don't like that.
"Ok. First person is..." I don't know if the assistant is looking into the crowd for the person, or because he want to see us squirm.
"Hailey DeWoody!" He sounds excited, as he points at the girl with the strawberry blonde hair and eyes as green as undergrowth standing right next to me.
"I don't want to Ed," Hailey looks at me with big, round, scared eyes and grips my arm even tighter. It's starting to hurt. "I don't want to."
"Come on Hailey! Time's ticking!"
I gently grab her hand and take it off my arm.
"You have to Hay Dog." I ruffle her hair, trying to make her laugh. "You'll be fine, but you have to go now."
The assistant walks up, grabs her wrist and storms away with her. I don't cry because I know I can't. Not in front of these people. Weakness is not good. So I stand there while my best friend is taken away to what could be her death. The assistant walks back in with an annoyed look on his face. "Let's not make this hard ok? The boy that will be joining her is Josh Kim."
A stubby blonde haired boy walks up. I know right from the first glance I can't trust him to protect Hailey. So I do the stupidest thing anyone could've done.
"Sir? May I take his place and go in with Hailey?"
The assistant smirks. "You must be her boyfriend. Don't wanna risk her dying without you? How sweet. Of course you can take Josh's place! What do you say Josh?"
Josh turns around to face me sheepishly. "T-thanks."
I give him a glare saying, I didn't do this for you. He nods in understanding and scurries back to his spot.
"Alright then. What's your name?" The assistant turns to me.
"Edward Owens."
"Ah yes. Alright. This way." He starts walking to the big double doors. I don't hesitate when I follow.
