Hailey

I close my eyes tightly as I fall through the portal. I expect to feel the ground under my back, but I only feel air. I open my eyes to find myself falling out of the sky.
Well this is it. This is how I die. Great.
I turn my body around in the air, twisting to get a better view of the ground and how far off I am. I'm only about 15 feet from the ground at this point, but I see a pile of garbage bags over to the right side of the alley I'm diving into. If I can move my body enough, I might live for a few seconds longer.
"Might as well." I mumble. What's to lose? I swim through the air, trying to get over to the bags. I'm descending quickly. 10 feet. 7 feet. 5 feet. Almost to the garbage bags.
Smack!
I hit them hard, making my arm hurt even more so where the bolt hit. I groan. At least I'm not dead. I blink my eyes and push myself up.
Thud
I turn my head at the sound of muscle hitting the floor and a groan. The sight surprises me. I jump up, fast, making my arm ache. I stumble over to them.
"Ed? Are you ok?" He lays on his side, his face all scrunched up in pain. But he turns onto his back and faces me at the sound of a familiar voice.
"Hailey! Yes I'm....I'm ok. What about you?" He looks pointedly at my bleeding arm. I tuck it behind my back to hide it out of his sight range.
I give a weak smile. "Fine."
He pushes himself into a sitting position and looks around. "This doesn't really look like the 1400s does it?"
I hadn't really thought about it before, but as I look around, I see he's right. From what I can see if the alley way, there is trash everywhere. From cigarettes and beer bottles, to even a finger and an eye. Not to mention huge broken buildings and smoke everywhere.
I stand up from my crouch and pull up Edward. "You're right. This is not 1467." I glance at him. "Let's find out shall we?" I smile.
He returns it. No matter what position or time we're in, we are alive, battered but not broken, and together. "We shall."
We walk out of the alley, hands intertwined. We step around the corner, and are greeted with gun shots. We both fall to the ground, stunned and scared. I let out an "oof" as my back hits the floor. Edward is a tad bit luckier, landing on his butt instead. I look up to see a tall, thin, but muscular girl staring down at us. And I definitely don't miss the gun in her hand or the threat in her sky blue eyes.
"Who are you?" She has a sweet, silky voice. Strange that it comes from a beat up gangster. I would laugh if she couldn't kill me by simply moving moving a finger.
I sit up and face her. "Hailey DeWoody. And you are?"
She turns to the people behind her, who shrug. She puts her gun down and looks me in the eye. "Lael Owens. What's it to you?"
Owens. Me and Edward exchange surprised looks. I look at her. She does resemble him in some ways, now that she mentioned it.
"What year is it? And uh," I look at Edward who gives a small nod. "do you know someone named Edward Owens?"
The name stops her short. Lael looks at us. Back and forth. Back and forth.
"Yeah. He's my dad. My mom is Hailey. The year is 3018. Do you know them? Have you seen them?"
Me and Edward just met our future child. Great.
I look to see Edward's face go pale. He looks about ready to pass out. "That's-thats us." She looks at us like we have grown too heads.
"What? How? You too are way to young to be my parents."
"It's a lot to explain. We're from the past. Now please tell us what the heck happened. Why does the world look so messed up?"
Lael glances back at her little crew. "We can bring you back to our place. Ok? I'll tell you what happened then."
"What's to lose?" I look at Edward who is still half dead. "Come on Edward. Let's go."
"O-ok."
We stand up and Lael gives us each a dagger.
"You might need it. This way." She whips around and starts running. Me and Edward rush after her. I see a flash of metal before a sharp pain hits me in the abdomen, making me stagger.
"Hailey? HAILEY!" Edward spins around and comes toward me.
I blink, trying to stay upright. I crumple to the ground, hearing another gun shot as I black out.
