Madison DLGarza:
Hey. I don't think you should come round today

13:45
Um ok? Why?

14:07
Madison DLGarza:
There's just a lot of stuff going on rn so I can't do this assignment. Sorry.

14:16
Ok, nvm. Is there anything I can do?

16:30
Madison DLGarza
No.

16:30
U sure?

When she doesn't reply, you toss your phone to the side. I'm not waiting around for her to finally be bothered to text me back, you grumble in your head, thinking about how you're going to pull off this assignment by yourself. Miss Smith said it had to be collaborative. How on earth were you going to do that when your partner says she's not doing it?

All the hope you were inflated by last night slowly seeps out of your pores leaving you lying heavily on your bed. You can hear your parents downstairs cooking dinner. It's supposed to be some sort of 'date night' for them both seeing as they've been working so hard recently. You told them you would have your dinner sorted as you were going to suggest ordering pizza when you got round to Maddie's. On you, of course. You'd even set aside enough to pay for her sisters if they were around, to show that you really are a nice person. Honest. But just thinking about your silent phone is enough to push all feelings of generosity behind you and get on with your poster. Because that's how you're going to be handing it in. Your name scrawled on the back, alone, representative of how little the two of you worked on it. You've made up your mind. Screw it, you huff.

You're only just summoning the strength to roll yourself off your bed when your phone starts vibrating under your thigh. Reaching for it, you barely register Maddie's name on the screen before you slide your thumb across and hold it to your ear.

"Listen, I'm not gonna waste my time making it look like we both--"

"--such an ungrateful little brat! That's what you are! Selfish and ungrateful!"

"Maddie?" you say down the phone, checking the screen again to make sure it's the right number.

"You think you could have gotten to where you are without me pushing you?! Huh?! Answer me that, Madison, or I swear to God you're gonna regret it!"

Mrs De La Garza's voice shrills down the line but you keep it glued to your ear, sitting up straight, core tense.

"Maddie? Can you hear me?"

All you get is more shouting and screaming with the occasional sob which you guess is coming from your absent assignment partner. With a racing heart, you hop off your bed and streak downstairs, pulling your trainers on with one hand and grabbing your skateboard with the other.

"Bye!" you shout as cheerfully as you can muster back to your parents, and slam the door behind you so fast you can't even hear their response. The sun is already setting and as you push yourself forward down the road, you have no way of knowing where the next light will be found. At the back of your skull, Madison's cries drum against the bone. And it knocks you off-balance to think that, only about twenty-four hours ago, that wouldn't have bothered you.

You arrive at her huge house in what must be record time. Your chest heaves but the only thing you can think about is the screams coming from inside - real this time, not through a phone. You puff up the driveway, willing your legs not to stop and reconsider. You're only a couple of paces away from the door when it suddenly bursts open and Maddie runs outside, tears streaming down her red face. When she spots you, she knocks into you hard, wrapping her arms around you and crying into your neck.
