Rai left her spot on my shoulder and pulled me to my feet by my collar. I felt really light all of a sudden and looking down, I realised that my feet weren't touching the ground anymore, and I was just hovering weightlessly.

I wasn't even fully there; like someone had lowered the opacity of my appearance, I was somewhat translucent - the grass and the mud could be seen through my pale skin and the white of my shorts, that had miraculously faded of dirt and stains.

I took a quick look into the puddle at my feet again, but my reflection was gone.

Part of my brain wanted to flip a table and screech in horror about what my eyes were feeding it.

The other part just shrugged and went: What else is new?

"As you may know, people of this world are able to combine their spiritual and physical energy into what is known to them as chakra. Chakra can make you visible to the living and let you touch their world. When I kicked you earlier, you subconsciously moulded some and pushed it out. It made you feel all that as if you were still alive - but when you were about to hit the ground, you were pretty lucky your reflexes managed to shock the chakra away. And just now, that chakra faded away and you returned to your 'default' state. You are now completely hidden from the living's perception."

"Did you read that from a textbook? It's an awfully long explanation, how am I supposed to remember all that- ow!"

She whacked me over the head before she made herself comfortable on my shoulder again.

"If you forget, I'll be delighted to remind you!"

"How the hell can you touch me then?"

"I'm the same as you, idiot. Now, onwards, my steed. I accidentally turned you into a spirit, so I gotta make sure you get as much rebirth as I can get you. Means we need to find someone you can learn chakra control from."

"If they can't see me, how are they supposed to teach me?"

"No more questions. I will explain once we've found someone. And I might know where I can get you a teacher. Just follow my directions, I promise we'll find you a shinobi."

She pointed randomly into the mist.

I was just about to call her a weirdo again when I remembered the sheer strength residing in her tiny body. I shuddered at the thought of getting kicked or hit again, obediently following her finger, trying to get used to the idea of hovering.

I didn't really... walk. I took steps at first, but after seeing Rai stare at me judgementally, her own legs poised in stereotypical fairy movement, I started just willing myself to move - which worked surprisingly well. So well that Rai decided to stop hovering and sit on my shoulder again.
