Part 3
I unpacked my clothes into the mahogany dresser and took a nap amongst the bumblebee bed spread. As soon as I closed my eyes Aunt Gertrude was yelling up the stairs that dinner was ready. As if on cue, my stomach started to grumble and realized I didn't eat anything all day. I bounded down the stairs and sat at the table not even bothering to see what I look like.
I looked down at the carton in front of me and saw that we were having Chinese leftovers. At that moment my aunt stated, "Sorry, I couldn't make anything better. I didn't have time to run to the store." Perfect and I guess my mom didn't tell her I was a vegetarian. I looked into the carton and saw she gave me chicken and broccoli.
"Aunt Gertrude," I said timidly. "I hate to break it to you but I can't eat this. I'm a vegetarian." She looked at me with a blank stare. I continued "that means I don't eat meat."
"Well I gave you chicken and BROCCOLE didn't I?" I nodded my head yes in response. "Well eat around the chicken. Some kids in Africa would be thankful for a meal like that." I tried to think of a nasty retort but nothing came to mind. I looked back at my chicken and broccoli soaked in leftover teriyaki sauce and picked up a piece of broccoli and took a bite. Aunt Gertrude started mumbling something about "ungrateful kids these days...." I just rolled my eyes and went back to eating the chicken flavored broccoli. I forced down a couple more pieces and took a sip of water.
I pushed my chair back and brought the carton and my fork into the kitchen. I tossed the rest of the leftovers into the garbage and rinsed my fork in the sink. I went back into the kitchen muttering a curse as I almost tripped over one of the many cats. Aunt Gertrude was reading the latest Fancy Cat magazine. I cleared my throat pointedly and she looked up. "I think I'm going to go to bed. Traveling takes a lot out of you."
She looked at me and said "Ok sweetheart. Sleep tight." Sweetheart? Sleep tight? What was this woman on? I'm starting to think she's bipolar. First she's yelling at me and then she's calling me sweetheart.
I ran up the stairs and took out the Mac my parents got me for my birthday. I wasn't used to this shoebox sized house and meals containing meat. Back at home I lived in a penthouse apartment looking over central park and had people cook the meals I liked. I don't know how I'm going to make these 3 months. I was going to go on internet, but Aunt Gertrude's house didn't have f*ckin internet. I looked at the clock on the laptop and it read 9:56pm. I decided I should brush my teeth and head to bed. As I was coming back from the bathroom I heard the faint sounds of techno music. As I got closer to my room the sound amplified and was clearly audible. I looked through the window in my room to see that the neighbors were having a party. Wonderful.
That night I got a total of about four hours of sleep. I padded down the stairs to see what leftovers I was going to be greeted with for breakfast. Instead I smelled homemade pancakes. I quickly walked into the dinning room and saw a platter full of pancakes and a pitcher filled with what looked like, fresh squeezed orange juice. I greedily piled my plate with pancakes and drizzled them with syrup. Aunt Gertrude came out of the kitchen with flour on her face and sat down to eat. "How did you sleep last night Hun?" she asked. I gave her a shrug in response not wanting to tell her I was up half the night. After that we ate in silence.
Finally Aunt Gertrude broke the silence and asked "Sweetie, can you go and grab the paper for me?" I nodded in response, glad to get out of the house. I dashed to the door but stopped when I saw my reflection in the mirror in the hallway. My normally straight blonde hair was in a giant knot and I had dark circles under my blue eyes. I figured it didn't matter though. I assumed nobody worth caring about actually lived anywhere near someone like Aunt Gertrude.
I stepped out the door and the wind went through my plaid pajama pants and my think tank top. I shivered a little. I walked carefully down the path because I forgot to grab shoes. As I was nearing then end of the pathway I heard a car door close and an engine. I turned to the house that had the party last night and saw a guy talking to the person who got in the car. When he looked up I realized that he wasn't some ordinary guy. He was gorgeous. He had curly brown hair that had that just-got-out of bed look, green eyes that looked like they could see into your soul, and the whitest teeth I have ever seen. He was average height, taller than me and he looked like he worked out constantly.
Finally he looked at me and I realized I was staring. When he did this the car pulled out and drove away. I looked away quickly and bent down to pick up the news paper. When I looked back up he was smiling at me. I think my heart melted just a little bit.
