Chapter 2
My mind was clouded over all day. School just could not hold my interest at all on this particular day. I wondered how I would survive biology, considering that it was the most boring class on the face of the Earth.
I trudged there with a heavy heart-nothing like chloroplasts and mitochondria to hold your attention. I walked in, however, my attention was grasped. In the back of the room was the boy. Had he always been there? Or was he a new kid? If he had been in this class since the start of the year, I was going to kick myself in the face multiple times-how thick can I get?
Inside, my heart pounded. The boy gave me a look that clearly said, "What are you looking at?" I quickly turned away and struggled to find my seat. I flushed a neat pink. "Good afternoon. Pair up; we're doing the lab on cheek cells. Page 18." Mr. Hoffman ordered. He looked at me and motioned for me to come up to his desk.
I nervously shuffled up to the front of the room, aware of peoples' eyes on me. The boy was already up there, waiting. "Veronica, this is Taylor Wright. Mr. Wright, this is Veronica Davis. I've assigned you two to be lab partners."
"But-" I protested. It was rude of me to object to this, but I couldn't help it. My friend Emma was waving frantically at me from across the room.
"I'm sure Miss Cross will live without you. It's good to branch out and meet new people, Veronica." Mr. Hoffman chided.
I sighed, knowing the battle was lost. The boy-Taylor, as I now knew him-and I walked awkwardly side by side to the back of the room, where there was an empty table left. "So..." Taylor said. Neither of us were sure what to say to each other. "You're Veronica." It was more a statement than a question.
"Vera, please." I asked. "You're Taylor."
"That would be correct."
"Where did you come from?" I asked. "Are you like...new?"
Taylor said flatly, "No. I've been in this class since the start of the year."
"Oh, I never noticed you." I blurted out. I blushed when I realized what I had really said. I started to correct myself, but it was useless. The damage of what I had said soaked into him. He looked down and proceeded to do the lab and completely ignore me. Wasn't this a rousing start to our new friendship.
"Draw and observe cheek cells." He read off in a monotone voice. Taylor looked at me with dead eyes. "How about you go get the microscope and I'll supply the cheek cells?"
"Okay." I answered.
Taylor peered into the microscope first. "Well...they're blue." He noted.
His head popped back up. His dark brows were furrowed. "Why isn't my cheek blue then?"
I giggled. "It's the stain. They're actually clear, so we can't see them." I explained; it made me feel sort of smart.
"Then why is the inside of my mouth pink?" He questioned. I laughed quietly then muttered that I didn't know. An awkward silence descended as we both did our work. I wanted to say something more-something witty to let him know how funny I was. I wanted to let him know I could be fun and kind and sensitive, but with a dark, hidden side. I wanted him to like me. I had developed a giant crush on Taylor Wright, and there was no stopping it now as borderline obsession raged its way through my veins.
