The next day, while I was moping one of the floors in the house, one of the girls that worked in the house came up to me, "miss. Avis wants you to come see her." I raised an eyebrow then put up my moping stuff and went to her room. I didn't know why she would want to call me because she was trying out wedding dresses. The wedding was to be held in just a few days, and so her father wanted her to get her dress picked out now. I nocked on the door, "Avis? It's me Hugh." There was no reply but another girl that worked in the house opened it for me. I saw Avis standing on a stool in front of a mirror in a beautiful wedding gown. She really looked like a girl about to get married, except in the face.
He was staring at herself in the mirror, her eyes wide and looking tariffed and her mouth was slightly open in either awe or shock. She looked like she had seen a ghost, completely unlike herself. I took a step closer and saw her eyes where filled with tears, the tears would overflow at any moment. "Avis?" Was all I could manage. She looked at me, "Hugh, thank God." She said I'm a voice I could barely hear. She looked at all the house workers "you are all excused, thank you." They nodded and left the room. Avis let out a big sigh then went and sat on her bed burying her face in her hands. I just stood there not knowing what to say, "what am I getting myself into." She asked but it didn't sound like a question. "Well, you're getting married to a rich boy who's gonna take care of you so good like your Daddy did." Was all I could think to say. She chuckled, "well I'm getting married alright." She said and looked out the window, "it just feels like I'm the only one." She added, I frowned, "but you ain't the only one. Pretty girls like you get married all the time. I'd only seen one girl get married when I was at other masters houses, but the everyone kept talking about how they'd seen manny girls do the same thing as you." She smiled, "I know girls get married, that's not what I ment," she frowned, "it just feels like I'm the only girl that doesn't want to get married." I looked at the ground, "oh." Was all I could say. She smirked, "so you think I'm pretty huh, Hugh?" I looked at her with wide eyes and felt my cheeks get hot, "what? no, no I just ment-" she laughed got up and started pushing me to the door. "Get outta here so I can change." So I did.
A few hours later Avis came out in a fancy yellow dress with white gloves on and a hat with flowers on it. She was looking more herself now. She came up to me, "I would like to ask you if you can escort me to tea at my friend, Dorothy's house." I raised an eyebrow, "you don't have to ask me you know." She nodded, "I know, but it seems nicer to ask." I nodded, "I guess so." I held out my arm and she looped hers through mine, and so we took a stroll to Dorothy's house. It was just a few houses down. If it wasn't I would have driven the carriage to it. It was nice walking with her though. When we got to the house it was so chearful, seeing the girls laugh so much and have wonderful conversations. It made me feel very happy, sometimes at night after the master goes to sleep we have a small party. We sing and dance around the fire, but just for a little while. We stayed here until the sun got close to the trees. Then me and Avis said our goodbyes to Dorothy and the other girls and went home.
