CHAPTER 1
Disclaimer: I started writing this fanfic back in 2014, I was in fact 14, my English was poor, I had fun ideas but lost motivation in the story. Well, it's been years and I log back into this account and discover that a lot of people enjoyed this badly written fic and I believe that I should finish it. Not because it is a great masterpiece but because I want to finish one of the many fics that I started writing when I was a crazy fangirl. So enjoy,
<<the story does follow the events that actually happened on the show over the years, the story originated in my brain while watching season 11 blindly unaware of the shit show that Calzona turned out to be>>
Seattle, WA, 2018.
"Dr. Callie Torres. (Full name Calliope Iphigenia Torres) Born in Miami-Florida, daughter of Carlos Torres, Is known as one of the best orthopedic surgeons on the West Coast, her department is run under the principles of innovation, excellence and the promotion to achieve the impossible, after all it was Dr. Torres who was able to regenerate cartilage, changing the game for the treatment of soft tissues for recovering athletes. If that was not impressive enough It was Dr. Torres saved the million dollar hand and surgical career of his colleague and renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepard, outcome that had less than 10% of chance of happening but she made it happen. On top of it all, Torres is part of the 9% of women who choose orthopedics as their specialty and despite that she is ruling it and leading the way.
Located in Seattle since her internship, the city became her home and currently she continues to live in the city her wife Dr. Arizona Robbins and her daughter Sofia Robbins Sloan Torres. (Daughter of the late plastic suregeon Dr. Mark Sloan [1968-2012] and Dr. Torres ). Even though it may sound like she has it all, life has put her to the test on more than one occasion over the past ten years. In fact her family disowned her for her sexual orientation (Dr. Torres is, in her own words, proud to be the B in LGBTQ+) to this day the only person in her biological family whom she has a relationship is her father. Not only that, Remember the shooting that happened in a hospital? Well it was in Seattle Grace Mercy West (Now known as Grey + Sloan Memorial hospital) where Torres works. She was face to face with the shooter giving him something to put in his wound, she did so it to protect Dr. Robbins a patient and her own life. If that wasn't enough when she was 23 weeks pregnant with her daughter, she and her now wife got into a massive car crash, she had to have multiple surgeries, including, brain, heart and belly, her doctors (and friends) choose to deliver her daughter at 23 weeks, thankfully mother and baby had a full recovery.
Finally, destiny had one more major trauma for Dr. Torres, the tragedy of the Seattle Grace Five occurred. On the plane was not only her wife but her best friend and father of her child as well as good friends Derek Shepard, Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang and Lexie Grey. Six doctors got into that plane, five came back, and currently only 3 of them are alive. The surviving doctors and Dr. Torres acting as legal representative of her daughter sued the hospital, won and bought the hospital with the help of the Harper Avery foundation. The first hospital owned by doctors and ruled by doctors, was born and was renamed in memory of their dear friends Grey + Sloan Memorial Hospital.
In the plane crash, her wife lost her leg which inspired Dr. Torres to start the robotic limb initiative, it was once planed for Dr. Robbins but over the years it chanced into research directed to help veterans and war heroes. The goal? The production of limb almost as sensitive and responsive as a real leg or arm, one that can connect directly with the patient's brain as a real one would. The trial started years ago with Dr. Derek Shepard creating the sensors with Dr. Torres, today, his sister, Dr. Amelia Shepard is continuing the work and legacy of her late brother and helping Torres change the way prosthetics are build, whilst continuing with groundbreaking innovation in the field of neurosurgery.
Just one phase away, the final testing will be done next week at GSMH, if it's successful (which we have no doubt about) she indeed will change the face of orthopedic surgery and prosthetics"
Callie finished reading the article of the Medical Journal, she could go on, there is a whole page explaining in depth about the medical trial but this part, but seeing most of her life displayed in couple of paragraphs was tremendously frightening. Somethings were left out, thankfully, but the thick of it was there. The love, the loss, the trauma, and the medicine. In a way she felt extremely exposed, almost naked and the thought of not being successful in this trial would be extremely disappointing, not only to her but to her patients whom she worked with for years and become really fond of.
She got out of her head and remembered where she was.
"See Mark, even if the article is about me, they are constantly talking about you, they mention you more than Arizona." She laughed "and she was the inspiration of the whole thing, you know?" She smiled sadly and finally put the flowers in the floor.
"I bought this for you, And I know I didn't bring Sofia along with me this time but she had a sleepover at Meredith's house last night, in fact that is why Arizona isn't here, she is picking her up and I thought it was a good time for us to talk a little bit, you know? Just the two of us. " She sat down in the grass staring at the grave that said
"Mark Everett Sloan
1968-2012
Beloved Friend and Father
RIP"
She smiled, "You know, I read you the article because you'll be saying something like: Torres That's awesome you deserve it, I told you you were born to kick ass. " She paused for a minute as she cleaned up his tombstone, "Now listen to me I'm really scared and I don't know if I will be able to finish this this trial with success, the truth is I should not worry, everything is going according to plan, but I don't know, I have this feeling that something is going to happen, something bad. I just can't shake this feeling" Then in her mind she could hear mark say: Don't be silly Torres, now go kick some ass you are great, you'll make it. You are worrying about nothing.
"I know I being silly but this are the facts. People are saying that this goes well my career will change instantly, the truth is that is already changing, I'll be at least be nominated for every medical award there is. People will start to know me, but I don't know if I want that, I want to innovate and change the game... but I don't want to talk about it " she sighed and she sweared she could hear Mark say Come on Torres everyone likes you and if they don't it a them problem now tell me the truth. What are you afraid of?
"I don't want to let you down ... I mean I just- Mark you know you are my inspiration, yes Arizona is the love of my life but you are my soulmate, not romantically but in a weird way beyond a relationship. I can let the entire world down, but not you Mark I can't let you down. Not in my relationship with Arizona, not in the way we raise Sofia, not even in my career. I know you are somewhere watching, and I want you to be proud." she laughed at the thought of Mark staring at her like she has lost her mind.
"But also, something bad is going to happen, I just have this feeling, something is not right" she waited a few seconds for an answer, but she realized it was not coming, for some reason this was time she didn't hear Mark in her head.
"Right.... anyway, thanks for the talk... I guess I'll be back next week to tell you how it went down with the trial. See you later Sloan"
And with that she got in her car. Wilson was paging her 911 to the pit. Perfect timing, she thought.
In about 20 minutes she is entering the pit. "Wilson, you needed me"
"Yes doctor Torres.... but uh-i umm"
"Make words Wilson. Where is the trauma?"
"No there is no trauma, well there was a trauma but you- it was your-"
"My what"
"Your wife and daughter."
A/N Well... fixing my terrible English and fixing the story was harder than I initially thought.
