We pulled up to the coffee shop and I kept Max pretty oblivious to what was going on. It almost seemed like Kiara was more on edge. We were waiting in line for the delicious caffeinated nectar. Two loudly guys were in front of us fighting over who was gonna pay.
The shorter one glared at the taller one. "ROLLAND WE'VE GONE OVER THIS, I DON'T NEED YOU TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING." The taller one, Rolland I assume, calmly patted the shorter one on the back. "Matt it's okay, I want to do this." The shorter one, Matt, crossed his arms and pouted. I just laughed. Kind of reminds me of Max. He's always so calm. Even when I'm not.
They finished ordering and we walked up. "Hi! Welcome to Starbucks, how can I help you?" the girl eyed Max like she wanted to eat him. I felt a scowl form over my face. "I'll take a grande mocha cap." I said dryly. The girl looked down at me and Max put his arm around my should, pulling me in. "And your name sir?" It took me a second to pull my teeth apart. "Drew." She wrote it down and with a smile looked back up at Max.
"I'll just have a green tea. Hot." She took his order and asked his name. "Max." She did this weird cat thing and then said, "Max, wow. Got it." Max looked down at me and I rolled my eyes. Just then he picked me up by the waist and gave me a big kiss. Then set me down. The girl looked visibly stunned by that and then Max paid.
As we sat down Max gave me a sexy smirk. "What?" I said, with whipped cream on my upper lip. "Sometimes when you get jealous it just turns me on." That shut me up. Now was not the time or place. Kiara sat down with us but our attention was directed over to the two guys sitting at the table across from us.
"Oh okay, big bad guardian. You just do everything you want. Because you want. Regardless of how I feel." Rolland's face turned angry. "Well at least I'm not an ungrateful brat of a warrior." I watched as Matt slowly got up and walked away. I swear I caught some tears in his eyes. I grabbed my coffee and Max grabbed my arm. "Drew, it's none of our business." I rolled my eyes. "I have to. It'll make me feel bad if I don't try."
Max nodded and I got up. I went outside and found Matt sitting on a bench. I sat down next to him, coffee in hand. He was sobbing. "Are you okay?" I asked. He stopped crying but didn't look up. After a moment he took a deep breath. "I guess so. You heard what happened?" I shrugged. "I caught the worst of it." Matt let out a laugh.
"He just... treats me like I can't do anything sometimes. I know it means well. I do appreciate him. But he just has to do everything and be everything for me. Why can't I be something for him?" I listened quietly. Just so I could make sure that I knew the whole story.
"Why don't you try just telling him what you told me? I don't see any reason as to why he wouldn't listen to that?" I nodded to show him that I had hope. "Anger just clouds everything. Makes me kind of lash out. I know he doesn't deserve it but there's just so much pent up passion." I looked off into the street.
"I understand that. When I first met Max I thought that everything was going well. I thought everything was going to be okay. But sometimes with one look he can just control my emotions, right down to the rhythm of my breath." Matt looked up at me. "Are you a warrior too?"
"What?" I blinked at him.
"What."
I put my hand on Matt's. Look just talk to him, I promise that it's better than this. What if you actually lose each other? Could be life or death. "It is." he whispered. I stood up and pulled him up. "Come on, I'll help you." He nodded and followed me in.
Max's Point of View
The guy looked terrible. It was almost as if hurting his boyfriend's feelings gave him physical pain. I feel that. Hell, I've been there. It was hell. I decided to be a good person, something that Drew always brought out of me.
I walked over to the table, nodding at Kiara that I could do this alone. I sat where Matt sat across from Rolland. He blinked at me. "Hey I saw that-"
"It was none of your business." I was taken back by that. I stood my ground though. "Look, my boyfriend is out there helping yours so if you don't want my help cool. But no guarantees as to what he's saying unless you talk to me about it too." He glared at me.
Through gritted teeth he said, "Fine." I sat back and waited for him to tell me. I wasn't going to pry, he'd have to share. He took a deep breath. "It's just that I want to protect him. I want to do everything for him. He's a king. He's literally a warrior. Why is he so stubborn?" He slammed his fists on the table but I remained unphased. I didn't know what it was like to be completely honest.
I didn't know because Drew was always so accepting. Calm. Maybe he'd give me more push back if he hadn't had the life he had. I'd love him entirely regardless. "Have you ever looked at it from his point of view?" I asked. "A spoiled brat who's unappreciative?" I raised an eyebrow. "Dude you love him right?" He nodded slowly. "Then never speak of him like that again."
He looked shocked that I said that. I kept going in. "Why do you do what you do?" He sad and pondered. "Because I love him. Because I want him taken care of. I want him protected. He's died for me once. I had to save him. I can't lose him. He gave everything for me." I nodded.
"Drew did the same for me. He stood up to a very bad guy, took some beatings. Almost died. But We made it through. But Drew never saw me saving him, he always saw himself saving everyone else from his world. Saving them from what he went through, even if he was the victim." Rolland just stared at me. Almost knowing. "You a Guardian?"
"A what?"
"Nothing."
Matt walked back in, being lead by Drew. Drew looked his best when he was helping people. Powerful, understanding. He'd make a great mom. Well dad, but we all know he'd be the mom. I stood up and let Matt take his place. Drew sat next to him and I sat next to Rolland. "Neither of you speak." I said.
"Drew what'd you find out?" Drew sat back. "Matt isn't unappreciative, he just wants to provide like he's provided for. He wants to feel important. He wants to be something for Rolland." Rolland looked at Matt with so much love.
"Rolland here wants to protect him. Wants to give him everything. Wants to repay him for almost losing his life for him. Worship him like a king. He doesn't think Matt can't do anything, he wants to do everything for him because he deserves it." Matt stared back at Rolland. Eyes wet from tears.
"Sounds like you two need some privacy." Drew followed my lead and stood up. Matt hugged him and said thank you. Rolland fist bumped me and we went back to our coffee. "Wow you guy's should open a practice." Kiara said to us.
We rolled our eyes and kissed. "Come on let's go home." I got up and when I turned back I saw Kiara waving a tape at Drew.
"What's that?" Kiara and Drew's mouth dropped. Well fuck.
