Chapter 1
Japan 1681
I walked past busy villagers carrying a kindle of wood for my grandpa, winter is coming and we need to prepare ourselves for the harsh winter. Every year is the same, we collect rice from the rice fields, store them in the summer, give them to the Damiyo Tenichi for protection of our village then we end up low on food to feed everyone in the village. Sometimes we lose children or elders because they are to weak to cope, so of course we all hate the Damiyo for taking our rice. And for what? For protection?
He 'Protects' us from his own men, so they don't destroy our village and no matter how hard we try to grow a lot of rice, we are always left with less then half. But the Damiyo is not the only thing that we're afraid of, we are also afraid of the Shinobi.. In other words, Ninjas.
They're most evilest people in Japan and that's not all. They are vampires. Just our luck! They come every 2 months to feed on our people, we lose at least 15 people a year, because these vampires show no mercy, definitely not to us. Many villagers actually want to leave the village, but where will they go? We are far from any other village, and the city of Edo is quite far, and most people can't make that journey.
I slid open the door of my wooden house and stepped inside sliding the door closed behind me. Walking to the main room and setting down the wood by the fire I got on my knees and fed the fire with a couple pieces of wood from my kindle. My house was pretty small, since it was just me and my grandpa. The main room had a small table in the middle and two cusions on each end. There was a door which led to the bedroom, the other led to the kitchen and there was open doorways which overlooked the village.
Just minutes later my grandpa enters with a slight limp on his right leg and an arm held behind his back while the other carried a pot of hot water that he must have gotten from the stream and boiled it in the kitchen. His wrinkles curved as he smiled and placed the pot on the table and then took out 2 cups from the cabinet by the kitchen door.
''I'm making sencha Chizuru-chan, would you like one?'' He asked with that friendly smile.
''Sure grandpa, if its no trouble for you." I replied.
''Don't be silly, not at all'' He smiles and returns to the table, sets down the cups and pulls out tea leaves from his kimono pocket and puts them in the pot. I finish putting wood in the fire and walked into our room and start laying our tatami mats out. My grandpa is old and wont live any longer so I'm doing my best to do the work his body can't manage. I walked into the main room and sat down across from him as I watched my grandpa pour the tea into the cups. His white long beard sways as he yawned and it seems he has lost all of his black hair now. His brown eyes are concentrated in pouring the tea but his old fraile hands tremble. He looks up at me with those kind eyes and just smiles and passes me the cup of tea he just poured.
''Here you go child, drink it while its hot'' I take a sip of the tea and closed my eyes enjoying the natured taste of the tea. ''Thank you grandpa.'' I said to him after opening my eyes and watched as he took a sip of his tea and smiled. He always smiles even in bad situations that's the good thing of grandpa, always positive.
After 10 minutes of me telling him my day, I placed down my cup on the table and stretched my arms out to get out the tension.
"Man i need a nap-" I was cut off by the sound of the alarm bell ringing in the distance on the hill up by the village.
''Chizuru! Get to the temple now!'' Grandpa shot up from his cusion and grabbed me by my arm to pull me up.
''But-''
''Go! Now!'' He pulls me hard and takes me out the house and pushes me towards the village. Outside the villagers are running around madly and are heading towards the village. This isn't a samurai sighted warning or a bandit warning.
It was ninja.
I take a look at my grandpa, he nods his head towards the temple and pushes me towards it. ''Go to the temple its safe and I will meet you there, run and don't stop!'' I nod in understanding and run towards the temple, past the barn, past the other villagers houses, and I run with the other villagers and suddenly I'm temporarily paralyzed when a villager bumped into me knocking me down. I sat up and rubbed my head and that's when everything stops.
Everyone is standing there looking at the temple roof, there, stands a man wearing a blue over shirt with close-fitting arms with a jacket tied by a obi and knee length blue trousers with tabi boots. He just...stares at us and we stare back at him.
''Kill the monster!'' Screamed a man. A woman standing next to him cries out; "Are you mad?!"
We had a ninja attack a month ago, the ninja came early this time but he isn't moving.. just standing there which is odd. I slowly stand up and tie my long waist length hair in a ponytail to not get it in my face and make sure my white plain kimono is tied tightly by the obi as I ready myself for the ninja to make the move. Suddenly rocks are thrown at him, and he smoothly dodges and jumps down in front of the temple.
Everyone gasps, mothers hold their children and run into their houses, most people evacuate. Except me. I was meant to be in the temple but I cant go back, grandpa said go straight to the temple, but the vampire is blocking it. The leader of the village along with 5 other men step out of the temple, the ninja turns round and faces him. A women ushers me into her house, so I go in and go to the window watching, the woman joins and so does another man presuming is her husband
''You'll be safe here, so don't worry.'' She says in a reassuring voice
''Thank you for letting me in.'' I give her a thankful smile then turn my attention to the leader.
Leader Hisaki stomps his walking stick on the wooden ground of the temple patio in anger.
''Why do you come here?! You vampire are not welcome here, you scare our children and feed of our people! Go now foul demon!''
The vampire just stands there, I cannot see his expression because he is wearing a mask around his mouth, his back is turned to us but I can tell he's not afraid. No sympathy or expression, in a flash he quickly turns around and that's when I noticed 3 of our strongest villagers sneak up on the ninja. Are they insane?!
''Get the ninja!'' Shouts Leader Hisaki, and at that command, the villagers charge at the him. The first villager who is quite buff, bald hair and a mustache with a white kimono ponces at the ninja, he swiftly moves to the side making the villager face first into the dust. The second villager who looks the same as the first; buff, bald but he has a pointy nose and a green kimono throws a punch at the ninja, in a heartbeat the ninja grabbed his hand, twisted it and pushed him to his belly holding his arm behind his back in a arm lock.
Im speechless, I heard stories of how ninja vampires are so fast but I've never seen it in person or better yet believe it! I gasp as the second villager cries in pain begging him to stop but the ninja takes no notice and continues pushes his arm. He's going to brake his arm! I cant let this ninja do this to our people. On impulse and my adrenaline running, I leave the window and run out the door.
