The sunlight poured through the vibrant glass, elegantly flooding the chapel's bare walls and floors in a riot of colours. You were sat on the first bench, awed by the silent beauty of the small chapel. The air was warm and sweet, as the faint scent of pine and spices blanketed you. Quietly, you observed stillness and calm of the sacred building, incredibly aware of the peace you felt inside of yourself.

Not before long, five choir boys orderly entered the chapel followed by a plump old man, their choir teacher. They neatly assembled themselves behind a wooden stand, to the right of the altar, before placing their choir book onto the stand. You could tell they hadn't noticed you yet, as their faces were solemn and somber, rather than the shy and flushed profiles you knew.

"Now boys, we shall see whose practiced and who hasn't," the teacher said, looking at each of their pale faces.

"1 - 2, 1 - 2 - 3"

The first boy began to sing, lightly and softly. One by one, each of the boys followed the melody in harmonising pitches. A small smile graced your lips as you heard them explore their own music, encouraging and smiling at one another.

"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me~"

"I once was lost, but now am found,

T'was blind but now I see."

"T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear,
And Grace, my fears relieved~"

"How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed."

"Through many dangers, toils and snares,

We have already come~"

"T'was grace that brought us safe thus far,

And grace will lead us home,

And grace will lead us home."

"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me~"

"I once was lost, but now am found,

T'was blind but now I see."

"T'was blind but now I see."

Your eyes were closed, as you let their gentle and hopeful voices envelope you. You noticed the mellow sound of the breeze gracefully adding timbre to the soulful hymn; not before long, you found yourself nodding and quietly humming along.

The music stopped too quickly, and your eyes fluttered open as soon as it did. The choir boys were still standing in their line, but muttering amongst each other.

"Right boys, that was great," the teacher complimented. "It should be like that in mass as well. Now let me go get some papers."

The plump man left hurriedly, leaving the boys still mumbling to one another. Thankfully, they hadn't noticed you.

That was the first time you heard that hymn, soon you would feel every word of it. However, you didn't know that.

That was the first time you noticed him; a small smile on his face and large doe-like eyes. If you knew then, what you knew now, you may have taken more notice. Then again, it wouldn't have changed anything.
