Grateful dog

When Dave finally arrived back at his den morning has passed. Dave swung his head opening his mouth. Marlene hit the wall. Dave's stomach growled and Dave walked the opposite direction of Marlene and sat down.

Marlene sighed even though he had thrown her to the brick wall she couldn't feel anything else but grateful. Dave has saved her life and possibly her freedom. Marlene decided to speak to Dave she had to they couldn't stay in silence forever. She took a deep breath and gathered her courage.
"Thank you Dave for saving me."

Dave looked down and shook his head. Marlene's courage lowered.

"You're welcome."

Something told Marlene she wasn't welcome. The way the word welcome came out of Dave's mouth sounded sarcastic,angry, and... like he has been trying to hide his anger from her but failed.

Marlene gulped.

Marlene's courage has taken a hard hit from the last thing he had said.

"W...hats wrong?"
Marlene's words didn't come out as she intended.
Dave took a hard breath.
"Let me ask you a simple question where were you yesterday?"
