Dave had had enough and was finally over with it all well...almost.
"Ok! Fine you want to know where I was!"
Dave looked up. Had Marlene finally cracked or was she going to ramble on and on about nothing?
Dave has no idea but some progress had been made finally.Marlene interrupted his thoughts with her words.
"Um...you are going to be mad at me for this."
Dave was instantly even more interested.
"What...what is i...I mean why...why would I be mad at you?"
Marlene gulped.
"Um...um...it includes another dog...um well a lot more dogs and humans...a lot more humans!""What do you mean a lot more humans?"
Marlene gulped.
"Um... I got caught by the pound.""The pound?"
"The dog pound. I was visiting my mother and father. Then they caught me."
"And?"
"And I escaped from the pound. With all the other dogs but, I was super tired and needed to rest so one of the dogs let me stay at their den with their family."
Dave sighed.
"What why?"
Marlene spoke with worry.
"Ar... are you mad?"
Dave spoke sarcastically.
"No. Of course not my girl...girl friend...is that what you are...well is that what the humans call it or are you my wife?"Marlene frowned.
"Um Dave the humans don't give us labels they think all of us...us..." Marlene paused."You can say it."
Marlene gulped.
"They think of us as dogs. That's why we don't have labels they think all male dogs are dogs. If you know what I mean."
Marlene blushed.Dave clearly knew what she meant and it did make his heart skip a beat.
"Okay...then look my mate stayed at another dogs den. Wait was the dog male or female?"Marlene's heart skipped a beat.
Her eyes lowered as she spoke.
"The dog was male."
Dave's face flashed red in anger.
Dave shook his head and walked to his room.
Hours had passed and Dave hadn't came out of his room.
Marlene was worried she had finally crossed the line. A line that was hard to cross because Dave was patient and understanding. It seemed that maybe Dave had overreacted a bit Marlene thought. It was as if Marlene's mind was someone else's. Her mind was bringing more thoughts she didn't want to think. Her mind was forcing her to think upon such cruel thoughts that Marlene couldn't even tell if she belonged in the pound or not. The more Marlene thought the more she thought Dave had overreacted, that Dave shouldn't have acted that way, and that she could stay at male dogs houses if she wanted to. Marlene tried and tried to keep those bad thoughts about Dave away but, her mind had a mind of its own. Marlene had no way of controlling her thoughts and was thinking horribly of Dave.
Marlene flashed back to her memories as a pup living with her brother, sister, and parents.
"Marlene its Lenny your brother ! Karla, Mom, and Dad want you to come to the kitchen. You know... for your special day!"
Marlene's heart skipped a beat. It was her special day finally after she had waited so long.
She jumped off her bed and got ready.
As Marlene got ready the smell of smoke filled the air.
Marlene coughed.
