Trixie Korn
"I have something very important to tell you guys." Mom said as she dropped a spoon full of beans on my plate. I nodded as I looked across the table at my twin brother, Ben. His face wearing the same 'of course she does' expression as mine.
Mom always says she has something "important" to tell us at dinner, but It's usually just her talking about what she did the other day or what happened at the store.
Once, she told us that there was a sale was happening at Matens, a store near us where she buys most of our clothes from, and that she would probably bring us. This made Ben and I very excited because we rarely ever got to go outside, but she ended up canceling it last minute. Telling us that the sale had ended early.
I put a spoon full of mashed potatoes in my mouth and nodded, a sign so mom could go on.
She quickly sat down at the head of the table, clasping her hands together. Here we go, I thought, time for a story I don't care about.
"You guys know how you've always been home schooled right?" She said, taking her fork and stirring around her mashed potatoes.
Ben coughed. "Yeah," He said. '"Why?" I sat up straight in my chair, looking at her curiously.
She took a long sip of water, obviously trying to stall time. "Well," She started putting her glass of water down on the table. "I've been thinking, and I feel like you both should start going to public schools. I have already gone to your new school and talked to your principal. I have your schedules and you guys should be starting in two weeks."
I choked on my food.
Mom quickly stood from her seat and began patting my back. "Are you alright?" She asked, but I could barely hear her as many questions started to fill my mind.
Were going to school?
Actual school?
Why now?
I could not believe it.
After, for what seemed like, 10 minutes of mom worriedly patting my back and asking if I was alright, I calmed down. I looked over at Ben, realizing just now that he had not even reacted to what mom had said. Our eyes locked but he quickly looked away. Did he already know?
He laughed awkwardly as I stared at him. Mom always told me I had scary eyes, saying I got it from my father. Mom rarely ever talked about our father, Jeremy. Ben and I never knew anything about him, all we knew was that he had died in a car accident leaving work, trying to get to the hospital quickly when mom was in labor with Ben and I.
"When did this happen?" I asked my voice sounding colder than I intended. I looked up at mom, her gaze focused on the ground. I turned to my brother, watching him as he tried to leave the table. He stilled feeling my gaze on him, not moving an inch he turned his head slowly to look at me. I cleared my throat.
"Did you already know, Ben?"
"Uh- um," He hesitated. ¨Y-es, but Trixie mom told-¨ Before he could even finish I jumped up from my seat, my chair scraping the floor.
"I've been home schooled my whole life and I'm not going to stop now!" I yelled furiously, my voice raising by every word. "I am not going!"
I backed away from the table and started stomping towards my room, ignoring mom's pleads for me to come back.
I walked into my room slamming the door behind and locked it. I could not believe what had just happened. How could she lock up Ben and I for years and then all of a sudden sign us up for a public school and act like it was all ok?
Something seemed off. Very off.
I sighed as I fell onto to my bed backwards, wanting to rest my now pounding head. Wishing for the night to be over I closed my eyes and fell into darkness.
