The 4 vampire maidens entered their master's bedroom, he was sitting at the piano now on the wall, leaning on his elbow and banging a single key with his finger.
"Master?" Maria called. It's time to go hunt".
Codrin paused for a moment, stared at them, and then returned to his one-note piece.
Lavina coughed. "Master! It's time to-"
"I heard you" he mumbled, still focused on the piano. "I'm not in the mood".
"Come on, Master!" Tabitha exclaimed. "We haven't eaten in 3 days!"
"We're thirsty!" Olivia whined.
"I really don't want to draw blood from Snowflake or Cezar" Maria said firmly, "so if you would just bring a goat or something-"
"What would be the point?" Codrin goaned as he lay down on the piano bench. "Night in, night out, it's the same routine. I kill an animal, bring it back for you all to drink, then we get thirsty and I have to kill another animal for you to drink, and then after a while I bite someone for some reason, we have another mouth to feed, I kill more animals and for what? What does it all amount to?"
Tabitha put a hand to her head. "I hate it when he gets all existential on us!"
"What's the point in us carrying on like this?" He continued. "What's the purpose of our existence? Are we predators who prey on the weak? We drink their blood to survive, but to what end if we can never die?"
Olivia moaned as she cradled her head. "All this philosophical thinking is making me dizzy!"
"Let us, talk to him" said a voice.
The 4 maidens moved a side as Snowflake and the newly-changed Catalina stepped forth. Catalina now looked in perfect health her skin was paler and she now had eyes red. The bandages were gone and her hair was combed straight. She wore an eggplant gown that Lavina made and the garlic charm around her neck.
The others nodded in understanding and stepped outside to give the 3 some privacy. Once the door was shut, both of them looked sternely at Codrin.
"Codrin" Snowflake said "you know very well vampires can only go so long without blood".
"If I wasn't wearing this charm right now, I would be going crazy". Catalina continued. "I'm not happy about drawing blood from my brother or Snowflake either, as that nearly killed me. Of course, I'm grateful that you saved my life, but Cezar is too young to be losing so much blood and if he had to change him at this age.."
"Don't you both leture me!" He snapped. "I'm well aware of the consequences! I'm just...in a sore mood".
Snowflake nodded. "Yes, I told Catalina you were pining for a mate".
With a speed of a panther. He stuck his finger at Snowflake's chest. " I said I'm not... OW!!". He cried out as he touched a charm around Snowflake's neck. The charm was simple sliver chain with pendant that was colour of sky blue and white which was mixed together and on the outer edge it had sliver swirls embedded on. The charm is what he gave her if he got angry or needed to fend off other vampires. "I'm not pining" he repeated.
Then what's troubling you?" Snowflake asked in a gentle tone.
Codrin sighed as a window appeared in the wall beside him. He walked over to it and leaned his elbows to look at the night sky.
"I've been at this for a thousand years, and I wonder, why I was cursed with this life. Sometimes I think I might as well have burned in the sun like my mother intended. Some days I think of stepping out and just... ending it all".
Catalina and Snowflake were both astonished by his concession.
The fairy slowly approached him, "you mustn't talk like that. You do have a purpose in life". She placed a hand on his shoulder "you've got us".
A small smile plastered across his face, "you're all good company yes" a frown covered his face again, "It's just not enough. Sometimes I think you all would've been better off if you never met me. At least 3 of you wouldn't have to share my fate!"
Catalina spoke "hey! I knew what I was getting into when I donated my blood. I knew I wouldn't last long, but that whatever happened to me couldn'tbe any worse than the life I was leaving behind. Tabitha and Olivia did too. And Lavina and Maria might not even be alive if you hadn't..."
Codrin walked away from both of them making the window vanish.
Catalina watched him pensively. "Maybe you do need a mate. You say you're looking for more meaning to your vampirism. Perhaps you'd find that meaning if you had a eternal companion. We're all loyal to you, but we can't give you love, can we? Not romantic love. After all, vampires simply can't choose their mate".
Codrin hung his head and whispered, "they are only destined for one. My former master told me. The moment you see them, you just know".
Snowflake smiled, she touched his back again. "You'll find her someday. But neither of the others will live to see that day unless you get them something to drink. If you won't do it for yourself, do it for us". She paused. "Unless of course, you'd prefer that the others hunt for there own food..."
Codrin wheeled around in appalment and narrowed his eyes at her. Snowflake smirked in triumph, she knew the reason Codrin did all the hunting was so the others couldn't be responsible for as few deaths as possible.
"You're evil!" He grumbled in annoyance. Snowflake continued to smirk and shrugged. "I've living with you lot for years. What did you expect?"
