I stared at his lifeless body, placed in front of me in a casket.
Through my emotionless eyes, I could see people dressed in black, all around me, crying and hugging each other, looking for comfort.
It had been two days since I got the news and I could still hear my mother's voice as if she was talking to me at that very moment.. It was like my mind was a broken record that had gotten stuck on those words.
I continued to stare at the people around me, my eyes slowly drifting towards the priest who was getting ready to bless the casket.
He called for Adam's parents and slowly guided them towards their son. Mrs.samuels' eyes, that were first swollen, but dry, now began to well up with tears. I watched as she squeezed her husband's hand and pressed her face against his chest; his shirt soaking up her tears.
People quietened down and some continued their conversations in hushed whispers.
I felt my family, who had moved away from me to give me some space, walk toward me. My mother slowly held my hand and squeezed it as if to tell me that I was going to be okay..I knew I wasn't.
My father, brother and sister stood on the other side of her, their eyes filled empathy, both for me, and Adam's family.
The priest began sprinkling holy water on the casket and praying for Adam's soul to rest in peace. He then asked if any of his family members wanted to say their final goodbyes.
His mother stepped forward, her head held low. She knelt on the wet mud of the cemetery, beside her late son's casket and smiled as if remembering a fond memory.
"Adam was always a special boy." she began, her voice cracking slightly,"Everyone always said he was troubled. Always thought low of him. Like he was up to no good. But my boy, he never paid any attention to those people. I remember how he once said to me, "Ma, one day i'm gonna make you proud. No matter what anybody says, I want you to remember that." "She said, smiling sadly.
"He didn't have a lot of friends and he didn't think he would. That was until he met Angela." She said, looking in my direction.
I could feel everyone's eyes on me. This would normally bother me but at that moment, I didn't care. All I could see, was him. Laying there.
I looked back in her direction and gave her a slight smile. It was probably the first time I had shown any sign of emotion since I had heard of his death.
"She was good to my son. He trusted her. They were perfect for each other. And I think I speak for him as well when I say this. Thank you, Angie. For being there for Adam when no one else was."She said, finally.
I nodded and stared at the ground.
Mrs. Roberts stepped back as they lowered the casket underground. Everyone threw flowers and just like that, he was gone, buried 6 feet under.
Soon, everyone started to walk away from the site and headed their own ways.
My father, Richard, turned to me and asked, "Do you need some time, baby?"
I shook my head. "No, let's go." I said and headed towards the car with my family following me.
The car ride back home was silent. My 20 year old sister, Amanda, had her arms around me and I rested my head on her shoulders. Me being 17, we didn't have much of an age difference and were pretty close.
"Mom, can we stop for ice cream?" asked Joshua, my 6 year old brother, clearly not fully aware of what was happening.
"Now's probably not the best time, honey. How 'bout we go in the evening?" My mom replied, smiling at him.
"Alright." he said, pouting.
I ruffled his hair and planted a kiss on his forehead. He was so naive, so oblivious to what was happening around him.
Finally, we reached home. I followed Amy out of the car and she guided me home, her hands still around my shoulders.
After we all entered, I told my mother that I would be in my room and ran upstairs. I took my shoes off and went to take a shower.
After feeling a little fresh, I decided to to skip dinner and go directly to bed instead. I snuggled under my sheets and then, after 48 hours of fighting it back, I let the tears fall.
