My mouth fell agape and I froze. I don't believe it! This girl, whoever the heck she is, practically forced me into a job. Because I'm such a doormat, I nodded and gulped down my bubbling anger. The man clapped his large hands together and smiled. He was old and had to be about in his sixties.
"Lillian, thank you for bringing this girl! You get raise!" He praised the girl, Lillian while I fumed silently. He took my hand and he led me to what in assumed was the dining room. The marble was polished so well I could see the reflection of myself staring back at me. A chandelier with the sparkiling gems and candles, not lights, hung from the a rather large hook on the beautiful ceiling. The ceiling was painted a sky blue and cherubs played in the coulds, some sleeping, some up and about. Tables apon tables were alined, their ornate matching chairs placed upside down on their tops.
I breathed in the scenery. I would work... here? Everything didn't seem so bad anymore. I could imagine serving customers under the watch of the baby angels and walking couples and families to their tables.
"Wow," slipped from my lips as I laid my eyes on everything once again. So far, I'm loving L.A.
"Yes, yes, this is where you will work, but over there," He pointed to a podium towards the front of the room, which I assumed was where the hostess worked. I nodded.
"You will be hostess. May I ask your name?" He smiled a wide hearty smile. I can tell he isn't fluent in English. I imagine he moved from Paris or maybe even a smaller town in France to pursue his dream in bringing Italy to America.
"Cleventine Terrance." I stated.
"Welcome, Cleventine, I'm Japenzo." To my surprise he envoloped in a hug. He smelt like spices and cigar smoke. I found myself hugging him back. Then my phone buzzed in my pocket interrupting our display of affection. We pulled apart and I checked my phone to see a missed call from Mom. That's never good.
"Um, I'm sorry but I have to leave, my mother is looking for me." I said to him. Something clouded over his eyes and he nodded in understanding.
"You start on Saturday," He waved me goodbye and I made my way past the boardwalk and to our new home. I entered the house to see a very silent Daphne at the dining table and my mom at the stove. Odd. My mother never cooks. They turned at the noise of the door closing.
"May I ask why you're in so late, Cleventine?" My mother questioned. Her red curly hair was pulled back into a mop atop her head and wisps framed the sides of her face.
"I apparently have a job," I found myself smiling as I said this. Daphne's eyebrows raised significantly and my mom smiled.
"Really? Where?" My mother inquired and set the spatula down on the counter next to her and sat at the breakfast bar.
"This really fancy resturaunt at a boardwalk I stumbled opon while exploring called Japenzo's." I explained. My mother nodded in approvement and Daphne's eyebrows raised more.
After filling my family in, I headed up to my new room and turned on my radio. I let the music fill the silence and started to unpack more boxes. Into my fourth box of the night, a knocking at my door came. That knocking was Daphne.
"I kind of doubt that you actually talked to people, Clev." She said, "Do me a favor and prove me wrong," And with that she was gone as fast as she came.
