I held my phone close to my face, scrolling through Instagram, just passing time. I probably should sleep but I didn't feel like it. I hated going to sleep first; I felt too bad.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him almost dragging his feet into our shared bedroom.

"Michael, how are you? How was filming?"

"I'm not satisfied with it. I don't know, and I can't get it right."

He walked over, slowly laying next to me, putting his head on my chest. He sighed loudly as I stroked my hand through his hair.

"You want to talk about it?"
"No."
"Sleep?"
"Could you just... Tell me a story?"
I put my phone on the bed, thinking about what I could possibly tell him. My life was pretty usual, I didn't have many entertaining stories to tell.

"Um.. well, did I tell you how I broke my nose?"
"You broke your nose?"
"Many years ago, I was out shopping with my dad..."

"... He yells my name, and next thing I know, my nose and lips are wet and I'm on my ass, facing a large steel pole."

I tried my hardest not to giggle at the memory, not wanting to disturb him. It was difficult - I was a dumbass.
"Wow, you were an idiot as a child." He laughed, looking up at me and making eye contact for the first time today. He was finally smiling.

"But that's not the worst part! My nose is fucked, bending in every possible direction, but for some reason, groceries are the first priority! Some ladies gave me tissues but they are soaked in seconds. So I've got to walk around Woolworths with a red beard and witch nose."

At this point, Michael's laugh had grown softer, obviously getting tired. I continued stroking his hair until he was completely out, unresponsive to my stupid childhood stories. There was no way I was reaching the light switch without disturbing him - I settled to just pull a blanket over the both of us and sleep like that. I smiled, being grateful for my unluckiness that he didn't go to sleep upset.
