just this past week we had to say goodbye to the very-talented kid band TheEastLight as they were involved in an abuse scandal within their agency as victims. in the press conference held by leader seokcheol,it was revealed that a producer committed the following acts over a few years from 2015 onwards:
- hitting members' heads with iron microphones in the recording studios and baseball bats until their heads started bleeding
- smacking members' arms,legs,buttocks and other body parts until large bruises formed when mistakes were made
-winding and pulling a guitar string around seokcheol's neck when he made mistakes during practices sometime before the promotion of "holla",their debut single,in 2016
-not allowing medical treatment for the boys' injuries or bruises etc. before they appear on any shows as guests
in a recent interview,seokcheol's bandmate and younger brother seunghyun revealed he had suicidal thoughts at 14 and is now undergoing psychological treatment after bottling up all the trauma he had experienced from 2015-2017/2018. both have since left their agency,medialine entertainment.
on the agency's side,ceo kim changhwan released a statement that over his 30-year career he has not "inflicted" or condoned any abuse on his artists,yet he did nothing in their defense and even threatened the boys that if the scandal was revealed his parents would experience "10x more pain than now". he had also threatened to kill the members if they revealed anything to their parents,which is why they only recently brought it to light.
in the most recent update,the remaining four silent members-eunsung,junwook,sagang and woojin-had their contracts terminated to prevent any more abuse from happening.
this scandal demonstrates exploitation of human and children's rights,and is punishable by law according to the korean constitution. if you feel TheEastLight has been wronged and deserves justice,please support #JusticeForTheEastLight and sign the petition on the 청와대 (korean presidential residence and executive office building) website (MUST have facebook/twitter/naver to petition). let's all work together to curb exploitation of human rights in the kpop industry!!
