Amir floated. You know that thing they say about air? About the ability it has to,when vexed, move anything,to lengths it so desires? Amir saw that. What catapulted him into a state of delirium,is when on enquiey,he found out that his soon to be stepmom was his once upon a time girlfriend. It was unblocking the hose that stopped water from getting into the pool for a man who was drowning.
The wedding came and a whole new cycle of groove was unlocked. There was a lot for anyone who cared to eat,a lot for those who planned to steal and more than enough for those who wanted to hoard it home. It was a conspicuous display of financial might. Amir's father went to lengths to ensure that this one came out special. His sudden obsession with Kd didn't bother him or he couldn't even tell. Those around him were already getting tired of his dropping of her name in the midst of a serious conversation. Even the wind now sings songs only her name answers too. Too quick it happened. A man dressed with all the luxury on the outside suddenly became naked in thoughts. Some saw it as the infatuation that comes with being in love. Others countered this point, saying that this isn't the first time he will get married. A man of his age and maturity should know how to control emotions without looking very sheepish. Kd smiled. She knows conversations going thusly will happen behind her back. She couldn't as much as care.
Wedding ended as quickly as it started. The dust so gathered started to settle. Kd's aim was known to her and her alone but when the sun wants to heat everyone up,it starts very midly. Kd wanted total control of everything. She wanted to boss around, leaving anyone who cared to ask or even as little as look in no doubt as to who the boss is. All the smiles that came with the wedding disappeared. Her real self started to manifest. Everyone got a taste,a feel of her wrath on a very faithful Saturday. She slept late and as such couldn't afford to wake up early. Being a busy household, everyone got up to do what was expected of them. They didn't bother walking her up because they've been getting things done without her. Her presence made no difference to them. Kd woke up feeling very incensed. Saying that she was angered in her dreams will be akin to placing bricks on each other while building. Her chin went up the same way her body swole up. Her shoulders expanded to borders limitless as if trying to accommodate the sudden increase noticed in it's perimeters. Her pumped up fists did nothing to mitigate the plight of her shoulders. Her gaits was assured. She took a step after like every human does but made sure the ground felt the effect of her stepping on it before she made the next step. She walked into the family having breakfast. Amir saw her before everyone and knew immediately she was up to no good. He left the table for a very safe place. A safe place.
"Ina kwanan ku..Good morning." She said with a calmness that is usually, when subjected to piericing analysis,a prelude to trouble.
"Good morning,Amarya" They chorused. Amir's dad called out to her to come sit close to where he sat. She obliged. Call it a forte,a sanctuary and you'll be very accurate. From that point, she launched her first salvo." I kind of feel someone wants me dead. In this house."
"Dead kuma Amarya? Who'll want to kill you?
Kd ignored the question and facing nowhere in particular and talking to no one in particular, continued her outburst.
"Some people aren't happy with my arrival in this house. They've sworn to make my stay here similar to the stay in Guatanamo bay ..."
"Amarya you haven't answered the question"
"You can see hate from their faces" Kd continued unperturbed." You can see how dead their hearts are by looking at their eyes. You can see how devilish they're by just holding their hands. If not that the devil goes on holidays, tell me,what else can be as evil as serving the family breakfast without me? Do you want me to die of hunger and starvation? I haven't spent a week here and you've given me a clear indication of what to expect.."
Amir's mum was shocked. She couldn't talk. She tried to downplay the situation by apologizing by Kd is having none of it.
" It won't happen again. All, gather round. Apologize to your step mum"
"We're sorry."
"Keep it" she replied. " I don't need it. I don't see or control your hearts. How sure am I that you meant it from the depths?"
"You're really taking this thing too far" Amir's mum replied.
"My point exactly! I always knew she'd support her children. Always. I was told but argued that she looked nice. Now see myself. I haven't been married for a week and you've started mocking my childlessness."
She coughed twice and started to cry. Her husband quickly came to brighten her up.
"Come on Amarya. It isn't that bad" .
Kd stared at him. Everyone thought it to be a stare but to her,it was a shock. A shock that came from wondering if the charms she used has been effective in anyway.
"Is that all you have to say? You sat there, eating like an orphan, listening to her insult me and all you can do is say that?"
You could feel how rough a skin the air has here. Everyone was pricked. They sat on the edges of their chairs, waiting to see what he'll do. The girl just insulted him. To his face! They were hoping for something strong and decisive, true to nature but were shocked stiff when he called out the first wife to come apologize for her comments.
"Alhaji? Apologize? For what? I didn't do anything wrong? She should be the one apologizing because she just insulted you. It beats me how you let that slip."
"So you now dictate what should get my attention and what shouldn't? Apologize to her. It's very simple".
"Okay o. Amarya lamba(number 1),the apple of her husband's eyes,Ms goody two shoes, we're all sorry. Hope that ends everything".
"Yes" she replied, waving her hands and shrugging her shoulders. She kept queit for a while and called out to Amir. He contemplated going but decided against not going due to the presence of his parents.
"Kindly get me a glass of water" she said politely.
Amir looked at her for half a minute. If he had any doubts as to why she married his dad,the doubts were cleared today. She gave a quick look and followed it with a wry smile as though she was saying,"the beginning."
