Chapter 10
Sophia
So foolish. I was so foolish.
I dropped my head to my desk and buried my face in my arms, not caring that I was in the middle of class.
It was hard, so hard to say no.
What on earth am I supposed to do now? Our little display of affection happened yesterday. I spent one night lying in my bed, staring at the ceiling and replaying the moment over and over again. Alexis and Zoe were with me for a good portion of the time, saying encouraging words and insisting that this meant Kyle did feel the same way.
Well, now I know he feels the same way, the only problem was whether or not it was genuine.
Why am I making this so complicated?
The easy way out would be to accept his date, be his girlfriend and have my happily ever after with him, just like I wanted. Unfortunately, there was the other side of my mind that twisted everything around and complicated it all. It had me thinking in different directions. What if he was tricking me? Kyle Anderson would never fall in love so fast, let alone with a stranger. And he knows about how much I love him. What if I was just a joke?
It all seemed possible. He could be a good actor for all that's worth.
Sighing, I lifted my head back up and pressed my fingers into my temples. I had no tears left to cry. I used it all up two days ago.
It was like living in a dream and a nightmare. Just four days ago, I was still the girl who no one knew, who kept to herself and had a secret crush on Kyle. Now, I had met Kyle, he had supposedly declared his love for me, I had rejected him, and the whole student body recognizes who I am.
News spreads like wildfire in Middleton High School.
The final bell rang and stiffly, in robotic movements, I mechanically dropped my textbooks back in my bag. Saying a quick goodbye to my teacher I slipped into the crowded hallways, walking swiftly in the opposite direction. Ever since yesterday, I've resulted in going in and out of the school from the side doors to avoid any more collisions. Sadly, my car was still parked in the front, so this morning I was forced to sprint inside the building. It was a close call since Kyle was once again, earlier than me and standing at the front, where he could see the entire lot.
Cowardly, I know.
I wasn't so lucky this afternoon.
Maybe it was because I wasn't facing the same route as others. Or it was Brian who caught his attention by pointing me out. Or it was how every other teenager was trying to put me in the spotlight. Either way, Kyle still pinpointed my location.
So much for my plan.
Evelyn was with Luke, who was with his normal clump of guys. As much as I loved my best friend, I was almost ready to give her a piece of my mind when she decided to wave her arms frantically and shout my name at the top of her voice. "SOPHIA!"
It's needless to say she got every person to stare at me.
I sent Evelyn an icy glare. Shut it. She froze and stepped back, pulling the others with her. I felt a sting of guilt appear. Evelyn shouldn't be the one suffering from my depressed mood. She's been trying to help the whole time.
Quickly, I sent her apologetic look and mouthed 'sorry' to her. She understood, extended her thumb and pinky and placed it next to her ear, reminding me to call her. I waved back. Thank goodness she wasn't mad at me.
I went to my next situation. Kyle. I didn't meet his eyes, but based on the shiver that racked through my body, he was doing the exact opposite of what I was trying not to do.
