Chapter 13

Kyle

My whole life's been about winning. I never had trouble claiming a victory. Basketball, social status, friends, I've won them all. I can't even count how many girls I've won over before.

But none of them mattered. Only very few victories actually have a meaning behind them. My parents told me this many years ago. I didn't understand them until now.

And I've won a victory like that. At last.

Brian said to me recently that I've finally proved myself as a man. That I've finally won something worth it.

I've never heard words any more accurate.

I couldn't wipe the grin off my face even if I tried.

Just a few months ago, I had thought that my life was the definition of perfect. It wasn't. Now it was. Now my life was complete. There was a month left of school, my grades were good, the team's better than it's ever been, and Sophia and I were dating. It's never been better.

In the past two weeks or so I've been getting up early to get to school before my girlfriend. I didn't want to lose any time with her in the morning. Unfortunately, she had no classes with me besides math. We only had these few minutes together until classes start.

"Someone's in an awfully good mood," Adrian commented, slamming the door of his car. "Dude, you're actually in school earlier too!"

I sighed. "I've arrived early everyday this week. You don't need to repeat the same thing over and over."

Adrian shrugged. "I have to when I know the reason beneath this."

Our topic caught the attention of others and the guys leaped into the conversation. Wyatt wiggled his eyebrows. "Does this have to do with a certain girl that's been on your mind all day and night?"

My thoughts drifted to Sophia, as usual.

Brian smirked. "Aw, look at that! Kyle's in love!"

"And I thought I would be on my death before ever seeing him settle down." Landon mocked.

My smile faltered. "Shut up." Seriously, they've went over this at least a hundred times already.

"Don't tease your friend here," Evelyn scolded, coming up from behind Brian. "He's in love!" She ruffled my hair as if I was a five year old boy. "And I'm so proud of you!" She gushed.

I swatted her hand away. "Alright, that's enough." I had to run a hand through my hair in order to get it back into its original style.

Luke rolled his eyes. "I'm still warning you, Kyle. Break your heart and I'll break your body." He said seriously.

"I love her. You don't have to worry about it."

"Speaking about Sophia," Evelyn interrupted, "she's here now."

I turned. The smile also made a reappearance.

I watched as she stepped out of her car, her bag over her right shoulder. She looked beautiful, her thick locks bouncing with every movement she made. No makeup on her face. She had dressed simple in a long sleeved shirt and dark jeans. I guess it would be biased for me to say that she radiated beauty, but it was true. Perfect.

Before she could take another step, someone intercepted her, blocking my view of her. It was a guy with dark blond hair. Ryan West.

My expression dropped. He better not be flirting with her again.
