The next morning the home phone rang and I answered before momma had the chance. It was Coach Karen.
"Be outside in a leo and gym shorts, with your hair up. Bring a water bottle. See you in ten."
"WHAT" I said.
But she wasn't on the line anymore. So being six and being eager, I put on one if Avies leotards, pulled my hair up and grabbed a water from the kitchen and ran outiside, a small red car was out there waiting for me. I see Coach Karen and get in the car.
"Did my mom call you?" I said when I got in.
"Not exactly" she said. "When it comes to gymnastics, think of me as your mom" she said smiling.
I trusted Coach Karen.
We pull into the big gymnasium parking lot. She turns to the back and smiles at me.
"This is it" She says.
We get out of the car and walk in the double doors. Instantly I see tons of new, clean gym equipment and a bunch of little girls. There had to be 150 of them. Apparently these tryouts were a big deal. A very tall man with a comforting smile walked up to me. He was checking in all of the girls.
"Hello sweetie, what is your name?"
"Kamri Divinci" I smiled.
"How old are you?" He asked me.
"I'm six almost seven."
"Okay sounds great. Will you please go get in line behind the girl in the pink leotard over there?" He pointed at a small little brunette girl standing in a line of other small girls. I looked up at Coach K. for approval and she nodded to the girl and winked. I smiled at the tall coach and walked over to the little girl.
"Hi" I said energetically. "I'm Kamri."
"Hi" she said in a soft voice. She smiled at me.
"I'm Cecilia. But I go by Cece."
"How old are you?" I ask.
"I'm 6 and a half."
"So am I!" I exclaimed
Right then, a small lady walked up and stood in front of the line of girls.
She spoke in a thick accent.
"Okay girls partner up. It's time to try out."
Cece and I looked at each other.
We knew we were going to be partners. But who knew those two little girls would still be partners as elites?
