TW: brief mention of homophobia

Logan was late, again.
Patton paced anxiously back and forth in his living room, biting his fingernails (a bad habit which Logan had told him to stop doing).
Logan and Patton were supposed to be going on a date tonight. To dinner, specifically. There was this new fancy Italian restaurant that they wanted to try out, and Logan had suggested that they go there for dinner the next week.
Patton checked his watch. Logan was 10 minutes late.
Another thing, it was their anniversary. They had been dating for 3 years exactly, and Patton couldn't be happier.
Patton had been stressing about what to wear. He didn't want to wear a suit and seem to formal, but he didn't want to wear jeans and a shirt and seem to casual. He wanted to look nice, but not too nice.
Patton checked his watch again, 15 minutes late.
He had ended up settling on a pair of black pants, a dark grey sweater and a brown and grey striped scarf (it was quite chilly out).
When Patton finally heard the car pull up outside of his house (26 minutes late), and saw the lights shine through the front windows, he sighed with relief and ran outside. He saw Logan climb out of his car and walk to him. Patton leapt down the front steps and beginning to frantically talk.
"Logie! Thank goodness, when you were late I thought that something might have happened to you so I tried to call you but you didn't answer and I got worried and-"
Logan smiled and pressed his lips to Patton's, stemming his flow of rushed words. The kiss was sweet, and long. Patton fell limp, smiling into the kiss before wrapping his arms around Logan's neck.
When they finally let go of each other, Patton found he was slightly breathless.
"Hello, darling." Logan murmured, his arms around Patton's waist.
Patton grinned slightly, "Hi Logie."
Logan gently pushed Patton away from him, holding him at an arms length, "Are you ready?"
"Yes." Patton smiled, then frowned. "Why were you late?"
"Oh, um, I just had a small errand to run."
"What erran-"
Logan cut him off, "Enough questions, let's go."
Patton followed Logan to his car slowly, trying to figure out why Logan was acting like he was. But he shrugged it off, and climbed into the passenger seat of the car.
Once they had taken off, Logan spoke to Patton.
"So, how was work?" he asked. Patton worked at a high school, he was a Councillor/Special Ed. teacher/therapist of sorts.
Patton smiled widely. "It was really good! Virgil has improved a lot since the accident, he's beginning to get some of his strength back, and I suspect there may be some romance going on between him and Roman, he's always waiting for Virgil to finish his sessions, and so obvious that Virgil has feelings for him!"
Logan smiled lightly, "That's nice, but did anything happen at all with Damien..?"
Patton's smile faltered slightly. "N-no, nothing happened with him."
Though not fully believing him, Logan nodded and focused back on the road.
~~~
"This place is beautiful!" Patton exclaimed.
The couple had arrived at La Luce, and Logan had gotten them a table for two.
As they were lead to their table by a sweet looking Italian lady, Patton gazed around, his lighting up with every beautiful feature he noticed.
"Patton, darling, what will you be having?" Logan asked, when they had been seated.
"Umm..." Patton's eyes skimmed over the menu.
"Could I get the pasta con pom- pomo-"
Logan sighed, "The pasta pomodoro e basilico. Really, Patton? All of these delicacies at your fingertips, and you choose pasta?"
"It's the classic Italian meal! You haven't had Italian until you've had pasta!"
Logan shook his head and chuckled, "Very well. And I will have the vegan pesto pasta." Logan was a very strict vegan, crazy vegan. He point blank refused to kiss Patton unless he had drunk a glass of water or brushed his teeth. He had even held a protest against meat eating the year before, and had since received many emails from people who had become vegan after his protest, saying that his point of view had changed their beliefs completely.
It was hard for Patton to support Logan with his veganism. Logan had managed to convince him to go vegetarian, but he wasn't sure if he would be able to seperate Patton and his chocolate chip cookies. Logan had insisted that there was vegan chocolate, but Patton said that it wouldn't be the same.
"So you can get pasta and it's okay, but I can't get pasts without you lecturing me?!"
Logan smirked. "I am getting pasta because it is one of the very few vegan options on this menu."
Patton humphed and crossed his arms over his chest, smiling nevertheless.
~~~
The food was delicious. Patton had devoured his entire plate within a few minutes of it being served, but Logan managed to make his meal last much longer.
"Patton?"
Patton looked up from his second glass of wine, grinning.
"Yeah, Logie Bear?"
Logan chose his words carefully, and spoke with caution.
"If... anything ever happened... you would tell me, right?"
Patton tilted his head, confused. "Of course, Logie."
"You promise? No matter what?"
"Yeah..?"
Logan sighed, "Patton, honey, what happen with Damien? I can tell when you're lying to me, because your eyes dart around and you hesitate to speak, which you almost never do."
Patton looked down, "Logie..."
"Patton, tell me what happened."
Patton sighed, and kept his head down as he spoke.
"Earlier today, at work, I was talking to Thomas about tonight, and that it was our three year anniversary, you know?"
Logan nodded slowly.
"Well, I mentioned that we were gong out to have dinner and then- Damian overheard us talking. He waited around until Thomas went to teach his next class, then came over to me. And he-" Patton hesitated, breathing slowly, deeply.
"He started talking. He said horrible things about me, and you, about us. He-he told me that we were scum and that- being gay was disgusting and- and ever since the legalisation of gay marriage got out he's been even worse and he- he said that we'd rot in hell and that he'd kill every last o-one of us-" Patton bit his lip, struggling to hold back the sob that was fighting to leave him. Logan reached over and put his hand on top of Patton's, squeezing it gently.
"He was h-h-horrible, Logan! I- I know that it's no
d-different from the other t-t-times but today- today it hurt Logan, it really hurt!"
Patton had given up trying to hold back his tears, and he let out a loud sob, clutching onto Logan's hand. He whimpered, his shoulders shaking.
Logan frowned, "Patton, I'm so sorry. I didn't want our anniversary to be spent like this, but you have to tell me about these things, okay?"
Patton sniffed, "O-okay, Logie." He smiled weakly.
~~~
After that, the night was quite pleasant.
They talked and they laughed, and they swapped fond memories of their early relationship.
"R-remember the time that you bought me a dog, but you didn't know I was allergic?" Patton giggled.
"And I sneezed for an hour straight, the poor thing was terrified!"
Logan chuckled, "Yes, the dog was quite petrified in that moment in time. At least it got a good home after that."
"Yeah." Patton smiled. "Oh! Remember when Thomas and Leo got married, and Thomas threw the bouquet and I caught it? I swear, Thomas has brought that up at least once a week since that day! He keeps insisting that we'll be the next ones to get married, no matter how many times I tell him that's insane!"
Logan didn't know whether to smile with Patton or start crying. He paused, before speaking to Patton.
"Patton?"
Patton set down his glass of wine (number 5) and giggled. "Yeah, Logie?"
Logan hesitated, "You know what you said... about us getting married?"
"Yeah..?" Patton said slowly.
"And that... the thought of that was insane?"
Patton nodded, silent.
"Maybe... it's not so insane."
Logan slowly got out of his chair and sank down to one knee, reaching into his coat pocket, and withdrawing a small box.
Patton just stared at Logan, stunned.
"Patton Cooper, we've been in a relationship for three years exactly. I have loved you everyday for over three years. I've loved you ever since I laid eyes on you the first day we met, in our senior year of high school. Ever since then I've been hopelessly devoted to you, doing everything in my power to make life perfect for you."
Patton was still silent, his eyes wide.
"I'm willing to spend the rest of my life with you, Patton, and I want to. God, I want to grow old with you, live with you, experience life with you, but I can only do that if you want to, as well."
Logan took a deep breath and opened the box he held, revealing a diamond ring. It was beautiful, made of pure silver and a shining diamond.
"Patton Cooper, will you marry me?"
It seems like the entire restaurant had gone silent. All eyes were on Logan and Patton, waiting to see what the verdict would be.
And finally, Patton spoke.
"Yes."
Logan smiled, "Really? You mean it?"
"Yes, Logie, yes a thousand times!" Patton's face broke into a wide smile, the brightest smile to ever be on his face.
Logan stood up and took Patton's hand in his, slipping the ring onto Patton's finger, grinning.
Patton grinned as well, and the whole restaurant exploded in applause.
Patton wrapped his arms around Logan's neck and Logan lifted Patton off his feet and kissed him. The kiss was passionate and strong and heated and amazing. Logan twirled around with Patton in his arms, kissing him like his life depended on it.
Logan set Patton down, both of them smiling happily.
Who cared what Damien said, anyway?
All that mattered was that the two of them were finally happy, completely happy.
And nothing would ever change.
