TW: Death, car crash

Patton and Logan adopted Virgil when he was only three years old. They had been desperate for a child for years, and were ecstatic when they finally were able to adopt.
Virgil was an extremely shy child. The only person he trusted was Patton for years, and one day Patton decided to show Virgil into his special room. Inside the special room was a piano.
Now Virgil, having been raised for the beginning of his life in an orphanage, hadn't a clue what a piano was.
To him it merely looked like a large wooden structure with little black and white rectangles on it. He showed no interest, but then Patton sat down and began to play.
The way his dads fingers glided over the piano keys, so swift and delicate, and the beautiful sound that emitted from it, Virgil was awestruck.
Patton had looked at Virgil's wide eyes and smiled, shifting over a little so Virgil could climb into the bench with him. He began to sing softly. "You are my sunshine... my only sunshine..."
Virgil giggled, pressing a random key with his small fingers. Patton smiled down at his son and continued singing.
"You make me happy, when skies are grey... you'll never know dear... how much I love you..." As Patton sang the final notes, he heard Logan join in behind them.
"So please don't take my sunshine away..."

Patton taught Virgil the piano. Everyday you would see them on the bench together.
At first Virgil simply wanted to watch Patton, but he eventually got the courage to try and play a simple tune himself.
Of course, he failed the first time and almost gave up completely, but Patton told him that failing was only a first attempt in learning.
So Virgil pouted and tried again, following Patton's steps and soft words.                                                                             When he got it mostly right the second time the look in his eyes was enough to make Patton melt.
He was so proud of himself, his eyes shining and mouth smiling. Patton just about cried when Virgil tugged at his larger hands and asked, "Sing it for me?"
Virgil played the simple tune again while Patton sang it.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know dear, how much I love you, so please don't take my sunshine away..."
When Logan walked in on them playing and singing together he got a few tears of his own, though he'd deny it forever.

When Virgil started school he panicked. He's never been socially accepted with the other kids at the orphanage, so why should he be accepted at school?
The only way he could get to sleep the night before was when Patton played the piano for him, and he settled into a soft slumber, his pale lips lifted in a slight smile.                                                                             The next day at school Virgil sat alone in the playground, anxiously waiting for something to go wrong. Because something would go wrong for sure.
So when a boy with chocolate brown hair and a prince costume walked up to him, his instinct was to cower away, because he thought he meant him harm.
However, what he didn't expect was for the boy to hold out his hand, smile brightly and say
"I'm Roman, what's your name?" Needless to say, the two boys were inseparable ever since.

Virgil was happier. He struggled with anxiety and depression but fought through it with the help of his two dads, Patton and Logan, and his boyfriend, Roman.
He continued to play the piano, learning new songs faster than everyone else could comprehend, and sometimes even performing in front of small crowds, or at school. He got occasional praise from random people and students, and he felt good about that, but nothing compared to the proud look that Patton gave him every time he played the piano.

Things were going good for the family of three. They were happy, and that was all that mattered. Their lives seemed almost perfect, so when Patton called out that he was popping down to the shops they thought nothing of it. Logan pecked Patton in the cheek goodbye, and Virgil called out goodbye from where he was playing piano. Little did he know that he'd forever feel guilty for not saying goodbye to him properly.
It was hardly ten minutes later that Logan came running into his room and said they had to leave. When Virgil questioned as to why Logan told him, "Patton's been in an accident."
That alone was enough for Virgil to start crying. Not only because of what Logan said, but because Logan was also crying.
His father, Logan, a stoic man, had never cried in front of Virgil. But he was crying now. And that frightened Virgil the most.
When they arrived at the hospital where Patton had been taken Logan ran to the front desk and asked where he was. He was in surgery, they said. He'd be fine, they said. The father and son waited anxiously for what seemed like hours until the doctor finally came out with a somber look on his face.
Virgil knew. The second the doctor opened his mouth he knew that Patton hadn't survived.
Patton was dead.
And his life was over.
Without even waiting for Logan to tell him not to, Virgil ran. He pushed his way through the crowds of people and out of the hospital doors, running away. He didn't know where he was running, but he needed to get away from everything as fast as he could.
Virgil ran until it was dark. Until he could barely see in front of him, until he ached all over, until he couldn't run anymore.
When he finally stopped running he cried. He cried like he'd never cried before. Broken sobs wracked his body as he fell to the ground, unable to think at all.
He screamed, as well. He screamed until his throat was hoarse, until his throat felt like it was bleeding and his voice failed him.
Virgil had never felt such pain.
After crying and screaming for so long Virgil was exhausted. His body fell limp and he slumped against the trunk of a tree and slept.
It was Roman who found him, after being told the news by Logan and begged upon to help find Virgil. His heart broke when he found Virgil with a tear stained face sleeping next to a tree. He lifted him in his arms easily and carried him to his car, then drove him home, to Logan.
When he carried Virgil to the door Logan opened it, his heartbroken face showing relief at the sight of his son. Roman carried Virgil to his room and kissed him gently on the cheek. Logan was still sitting in the living room.
His face was blank, the only evidence of emotion were the tears streaming down his face.
Roman has experienced a family death before, and knew the pain Virgil and Logan must be feeling. And he felt it too. Patton had felt like his father more than biological one, and he was grieving on the inside.

Virgil didn't leave his room for months. Logan didn't go to work. Roman was basically living with the grieving men, making sure they were taken care of.
Logan usually accepted his food without a word, eating silently, even if it felt like cardboard going down his throat. Virgil was harder to feed. Sometimes he directly refused to eat, but sometimes Roman stayed with Virgil for an hour until he managed to get him to eat even a few mouthfuls. Eventually he just stopped eating altogether, and Roman eventually gave up. But he stayed.
The piano began collecting dust, as no one dared to touch it, as if preserving it incase Patton needed to play it again.
Until one day, while Logan was staring at a wall and Roman was making food, they heard the soft sound of piano keys coming from the room that had been empty for several months.
A flicker of life seemed to spark in Logan's eyes as the familiar tune went around the house. He stood up, his joints cracking from lack of movement, and made his way towards the sound.
Roman heard it too. He had always enjoyed Patton's piano playing, as well as Virgil's, and now it offered comfort in this dark time. He stopped what he was doing and walked to towards the sound.
Logan and Roman mer halfway there, both confused, and continued to the piano.
They saw the piano room door was closed, and held their ears up to it. The music was slightly muffled, but it was clear what was being played.
The soft tune brought up past memories in both Logan and Roman, and they each saw each other begin to cry.
Virgil's broken voice sang softly, faltering every now and then, and so emotional.
"You are my sunshine... my only sunshine... you make me happy... when skies are grey... you'll never know dear... how much I love you... so please don't take.. my sunshine... away..."
