Art glanced down at her wrist in a vain attempt to tell the time before letting out a frustrated sigh. She shook her head at her own stupidity and pulled the watch she had taken off ten minutes before out of the gray basket she had pinned between her arm and her hip and sighed again. Her plane was going to leave in fifteen minutes and she was still stuck in security. She had come early and was still waiting in airport security, that was really the most frustrating part of the whole ordeal.

“Dammit, I’m gonna be late,” a voice growled behind her, stringing out a few cuss words in its mumbled sentences about technology, airports, terrorists, pat-downs, and the damn machines breaking right after. Art felt like doing the same herself. After all, holding an airport basket in one awkward hip-arm-hold, belt hanging from her fingers, shoes dangling in the other, rolling suitcases that were supposed to make this trip easier uselessly and heavily dangled off of semi-weak arms didn’t exactly make her overjoyed.

On top of that, just as she got everything somewhat situated in the least awkward, painful, decent, and embarrassing way, her nose started to itch. And not that itch that you could easily ignore, no no no that would be too easy. It was the type of itch that felt like she had just snorted an entire bottle of pepper in one go, and there was nothing she could do about it.

Why don’t they make me try to balance on one of those giant red balls and try to juggle bowling pins on fire while singing Bohemian Rhapsody word for word too? Just to add to the entire experience. A voice spat in her head, flaring and unflairing nostrils to try to scratch the persistent itch.

She was going to miss her flight; she could feel the fear churn in the pit of her stomach. What would her Dad think? Would he hate her forever? Never invite her again?

Do you really even want to go? The voice asked, the only question Art new she couldn’t answer. She wanted to see her father again, desperately. All her life, she’s felt like she’s been missing something. Her young mind had blamed it on her father’s non-existence from her life, but she wasn’t sure she really wanted to leave her home and her friends, her family, to see this man who gave up trying to communicate with his daughter years ago.

It would be easy, she knew, just to put her shoes back on and sprint out of the door. To return to her comfort zone with her job, to play at the coffee shop and begin to raise money for college again, would be so simple. But her feet felt like lead, she couldn’t move at all.

“Aloha happy travelers!” A robotic intercom voice yelled, “We here at Hawaiian Airlines try to make your flight experience the best, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We are happy to say that we now have our X-Ray scanners back up and working, so you will all soon be able to board your flights. If you have missed your flight, we here at Hawaiian Airlines will give you a refund. Mahalo, or ‘thank you,’ for your patience and we hope to see you again soon.”

I’m gonna have to haul ass to make this plane, Art mumbled in her head before placing the box on the conveyer belt leading to the x-ray box. The churning of her stomach hadn’t subsided, which was weird for her, but she just ignored it and tried to shove everything her hands into the one box she had… unsuccessfully.

“Louis, cheer up!” Niall smiled, tugging the corners of Louis’ mouth up before chanting, “Turn that frown, upside down!”

Louis rolled his eyes and batted the man’s hands away. He crossed his arms over his chest and tapped his foot impatiently; the damn flight was delayed for the idiots that hadn’t arrived early enough to beat the traffic jam that was security. Hadn’t he been through enough emotional pain already? Why did he have to wait for another hour for people he’d no doubt probably never see again? He let out a short sigh. They should’ve just paid the extra thousand for the private jet, then they wouldn’t have to wait for their joint flight to meet with them in Hawaii for hours.
