As Freya trained, she thought back on the journey that had taken her here. She'd been at the base for about a month and she was completely in control of everything inside of herself. Well, not everything. Freya banished these thoughts and the face that haunted the part of her that couldn't be controlled. Fortunately, her barriers keep that part well at bay. Someone walked up behind her and, with Freya's eyes still closed, she mentally forced the person to halt. She stood from the rock she was sitting on and turned around. Seeing Samantha, she let her go and allowed her to walk closer.
"You're getting a lot better, Freya. I'm impressed. Your telekinesis is progressing farther than any I've seen so far." Freya simply looked at her with a bored, irritated expression. Samantha continued, "How are you doing with the fighting aspect of your abilities?"
Freya's eyes merely flashed, and Samantha was surrounded by a ring of flames. Her eyes cooled, and the fire did the same. "How do you think I'm doing?"
Samantha sighed. "Freya, you need to get over this anger. Removing your barriers allowed you to trust me, if only for a minute. If that hadn't happened, you never would've gotten anywhere."
Freya laughed sharply. "I wouldn't have gotten anywhere? I believe that I was doing fine before I was forced to come here." Samantha simply shook her head and walked away to check on the other trainees.
Freya sat back down and watched the other people training in the field. She saw the arrogant jerk she'd messed with on her first day of training. The idiot was an "ultimate fighter," a person with the ability to mimic any fighting move and excel at it. She smiled, and her eyes flashed with an element of malice, an attribute that had been showing up a lot more in her lately. Immediately, the guy, who had been beating up a trainee in hand-to-hand combat, was suspended in the air, immobilized. She laughed at the confused look on his face and held him there. The trainee, shocked, whipped around to look at Freya. When he realized what she had done, a huge grin spread across his face. Her eyes flashed again and a small rock began following the trainee around, bouncing off of his heels.
Other people were starting to take notice. Across the way, Jamie had wandered onto the field just in time to see the the boy trip over the rock and fall flat on his face. Immediately, Jamie's eyes glanced up to Freya, who still hadn't noticed he was there. There was a small grin on her face that he recognized all too well. Jamie weaved in and out of the crowd of trainees and up to Freya. He folded his arms across his chest. "Having fun?" He deadpanned.
Freya immediately let the jerk go, not catching him as he landed heavily and crumpled to the ground. The rock stopped following the other trainee, and Freya turned to look at Jamie. "Why are you here?"
"Well, I have to train, don't I?" He said, running a hand through his hair. "Though lately the training I've been through has been less than effective. I swear, Simon is a nut job. He's trying to convince me that getting into my head will help me control my visions. All it's doing is making me more vulnerable."
Freya laughed. "You, vulnerable? Never."
"Surprising, right?" Jamie allowed himself a smile. "I was hoping to get a little bit more concrete training, but I see you've done plenty of that yourself." Jamie paused. "So, anyway...the cafeteria has some really delicious-looking frozen yogurt...you wanna take a break?"
"Sure, why not," Freya said, descending from the rock in one fluid motion. They walked for a bit, and then she turned to Jamie. "So what's your ulterior motive?"
"You read me like an open book," Jamie said, glancing over his shoulder at the trainers, who hadn't even noticed their absence. "I had a vision," he said, his voice low, "of Martin and Jackson talking. I couldn't tell for sure, but it looked like they were in the kitchen. I heard our names. Don't you think it's worth checking out?"
