THE HUNT

PART NINE

We fled to the car, and Jessica sighed once we were inside. The temperature was dropping, slowly but surely. I turned on the heater and heat blasted on our faces. Jessica shivered.

“Why did he do that?” she asked. She was shaking her head slowly.  “Why did Syd ruin my Dad’s office?” I frowned, trying to answer that. Then, it came to me.

“Unless he knew?” I said, it sounded more like a question than an idea. Jessica looked at me, and she frowned with confusion. “Maybe he knew I was coming to look for the information,” I explained, and Jessica’s eyes widened.

“So he got rid of the information so you couldn’t find him,” she finished for me. “That makes sense.” I nodded, unfolding the cheque again.

“Except he didn’t,” I said, pointing to the cheque. “Barry Gardens was hired to.” I read the name off the cheque, and I pulled my phone out of my pocket.

“What are you doing?” Jessica asked. I found Evan’s number and I messaged him.

“I’m asking Evan to research our new found friend,” I said, hitting the ‘send’ button. Jessica nodded.

“Maybe we could pay this Barry guy a visit?” she asked, a cold edge to her tone. I looked at her and I smiled. She was thinking like a hunter now, not just a clueless new born.

“Of course we will,” I said. “Let’s see how badly he wants his money, shall we?” I asked her and she chuckled. We waited in the car for Evan to reply.

Evan was an old friend of mine, and he works with the FBI which allows me to stay invisible to detectives and officers. Except Syd, of course.

And, no, Evan’s not a vampire. He broke the rules in Heaven one hundred years ago, and I found him and taught him everything he needs to know. He’s like a brother to me.

My phone buzzed inside my pocket, and I pulled it out. It was a messaged from Evan.

‘7 Russel Lane, BA2 8SJ.’ I smiled and shoved my phone back in my pocket.

“You got the address?” Jessica asked.

“Yeah.” I peeled away from the building in a quick speed.

Mr Gardens was about to get one hell of a visit.

I walked up to the front door of the small house, and I knocked on the door. It had been painted blue, but the paint was chipping away.

The door suddenly flew open to reveal a lady with a crying toddler on her hip. She glared at Jessica and me, before saying, “What do you want?” Rude.

“Hello, we have come to see Mr Barry Gardens? Is he in?” I asked politely. “I’m Katie,” I introduced.

“Rachel,” Jessica chimed in. “I’m Rachel.”

“Who brought you here?” the woman asked warily, eyeing me down like I was a ticking bomb.

 “Syd Fletcher.”

 The woman nodded. “Come in.”

I followed her inside and Jessica shut the door behind her. The woman led to another room, which was small and stuffy, and put the child down.
