THE HUNT
PART FOURTEEN
The first thing I did was call Evan. Jess and I had ran the fastest we could until we came across a closing supermarket a few miles away. I had hotwired a random car before speeding off to anywhere but here.
Jess sobbed heavily in the back of the car, hugging her knees and crying into them. I felt so groggy, and just overall rubbish, but I didn't stop at any services for coffee. I didn't want to in case someone noticed the blood on the both of us, and how there were no keys in the engine.
However, when I grew tired of Jessica's sobs, I called Evan whilst the car waited in a lay-by. I got out and pretended to check out one of the car tyres, just in case anyone was suspicious. (Even though it was late at night, the road was pretty busy.)
"Hello?" Evan answered the phone after three rings. He must've been worried, waiting for me to call. I smiled at the thought.
"Evan," I replied. "Look, I've got a situation. I need you to come down as fast as you can."
All Evan said was, "What happened?"
"There was a girl," I said first. "She-she drew a picture of me...her mother was dead," I babbled. I sounded like an insane person, rambling on, but I couldn't help it; today's events had taken it's toll on me.
"Lauren, get some rest, okay? I'll be there by morning."
"Wait, how do you kno where-" The phone went dead, signalling that the battery had finally given up waiting for charge. "Crap!" I threw the rubbish onto the floor and it shattered like glass.
I sighed and took the SIM card out of the damaged phone, and I kept it inside my pocket. I heard a car door slam and I stilled. Everything made me think of the child...was it her? Had she followed me?
I snapped back to reality and faced the car. It was empty. I looked at the field and saw Jessica running at full speed. I yelled after her and followed her, faster than her. It didnt take long for me to catch up.
"Hey! Jess, what are you doing?" I grabbed her shoulder. "Are you insane?" I shoved Jess to face me and she had tears rolling down her cheeks.
"I'm a monster, Lauren," she whispered. "I'm disgusting."
"And you think running away will put Lucy's limbs back together?" I snapped. "Get real."
Jess' eyes watered. "She asked me to do it...she said she was fed up of Syd and his lifestyle...she told me what to do, and do it with no regrets." Jessica broke down again.
"Look-"
"Your mum's here," Jess whispered. "She says not to go back to the car, the police are there." Jess sniffed. "I'm a horrible person."
I was trying to take in what she had just informed me. Again, it annoyed me I couldn't see my own mother, but Jessica could easily talk to her.
"You're so annoying," I muttered. I let go of her shoulders and grabbed her by the arm. She followed me quickly; I could hear her light tears pad on the floor as we ran through the dark.
If Jess hadn't of ran out of the car, we could be gone by now, leaving the police behind. My mind wandered back to my baby..we had left it by the field that Syd met us at. It had probably made some thief's day.
