THE HUNT

PART THIRTEEN

I brought my elbow down and I heard an echoing crack from Lucy's nose. She let out an ear-piercing scream as blood leaked out from her broken nose. Jess stood behind me, tense and unmoving. Her eyes were tightly shut and she was trying to block out her friend's screams.

"Please," Lucy said weakly. "Just let me go."

We were in the middle of a field with a surrounding forest on the edge of the field. I heard a car pull up by the gate to the entrance, and I bent down to Lucy's level.

"If you stay still, you can go back to your family, okay?" Lucy nodded slowly, covering her nose with her forearm. Blood was seeping onto her mud-stained clothes.

I heard more than one car pull up before loads of heavy footprints on the ground. I felt a bit outnumbered. Two against, what, fifteen? How dangerous did Syd think I am?

I saw figures enter the field and.i counted eleven men. They all had huge builds and guns on them. Two at least for each man, whereas Jessica had a handgun, and I had a knife in my boot.

The men made their way to us and I held my head up a little higher. I wasn't finshed fighting yet. I noticed Syd was behind the men for protection. Jessica put her hand on her weapon but I shook my head slightly. We didn't want to kill him, I needed answers. And it was about time, too.

The men approcached the three of us, and I was pumping with adrenaline. I was finally with Syd. I could get the answers I needed before taking my time to kill. I wasn't too sure about Lucy.

Syd stepped forward and I smiled at him, my purple eyes glowing. He narrowed his eyebrows at the sight of me and his bloody niece.

"This is very unprofessional, Miss Quinn," Syd spoke after a while.

"I don't think either of us have been playing by the rules, have we?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at my victim. He glared at me.

"Give my niece back."

"Give me answers," I answered back. "Then we can move on and leave each other the hell alone."

Syd laughed, as if I had just said the funniest thing he'd ever heard. He didn't get out much. I waited until he was done laughing.

"My client is paying a lot for you, I can't give up money like that, angel." What Jess had mentioned earlier rang through my mind, about there being a female involved. A female higher than Syd.

"I hope that money can get you a new niece," I said sweetly. Syd quit laughing and his face darkened.

"What makes you think you alone can take down my men?" I was stumped. I looked back and my chest deflated as I realised Jess wasn't there. Where was she? Why wasn't she here?

I snapped my head towards the men and they were coning closer. Lucy was clawing at my arm for me to loosen my grip, but I didn't. Instead I grabbed the girl and ran towards the forest.

Heavy footsteps were behind me but they weren't that close behind. Lucy was slumped over my shoulder as she pounded on my back.

"Let me go, you sick freak!" I ignored her, not caring what she thought. She was probably going to die soon, anyway.

I ran through the forest, avoiding trees and their roots. I ran for, another minute before I reached a long road. I ran down it, not thinking straight at all.
