✦ chapter two ✦

as if by chance, snow had begun to fall that night. pinebranch sat inside the medicine den, staring out into the night. small white flecks fell from the sky, and pinebranch sneezed as one landed on his nose.

"great," he complained to roseclaw. "the weather only gets bad when i'm about to leave the territory!"

roseclaw shrugged. "maybe it's a warning. has starclan spoken to you?"

the tom sat down. "the last time they spoke to me was when i was warned they were angry with us."

the she-cat sighed and tucked her paws under her. she shut her eyes, as if thinking of a way to work things out. "maybe they're mad because nobody has spoken out against bristlestar. he led us into battle that costed the lives of many cats."

pinebranch sat in silence. what could he say back? bristlestar was a scary tom that was partially senile.

"maybe they are mad i joined," beatrice calmly said as she stalked into the den.

pinebranch's fur rose. "get your filthy pelt out of my den," he snarled.

the warrior sat down and licked a paw. "i just need some poppy seeds. i can't seem to fall asleep."

"good!" pinebranch shot at her.

beatrice narrowed her eyes. "anyways. i don't believe in this 'starclan' you speak of, but maybe they just hate kittypets. sucks for them though, because i'm not leaving."

roseclaw gasped. "don't say that! starclan is real! i have spoken and seen them!"

the other she-cat rolled her eyes. "whatever. can i have my poppy seeds now?"

pinebranch threw a bundle of them at her. "stay away from me and roseclaw! we know you're bad news!" he growled.

beatrice ignored him and left. a cold breeze blew into the den, and for a second pinebranch wished it'd carry him away.

the tom curled up in his nest and continued to look outside. he silently wished to see his brother walk in asking for herbs, but knew that'd never happen again. maybe they are mad about beatrice... after all, she doesn't even believe in them.
